Age of lens?

Quick question...
Is there a way of finding out the age of a lens from the number on it?

Thanks to both - should have said it was a Nikon.

I think I have worked out that my 24-70 is from approx early 2009 -not sure if that is good news or bad!

2009? but that's like brand spanking new!

That's really no age for a lens, but of course it may depend on, who used it before and for what...

My little 12-24 is from ~2003, but if needed, here I would pay ~£50 for an official Nikon service, and it would come back as good as new.
Or better...
