Yes
It's not too far away till my local airshow, i went last year and got some shots i was pretty happy with for a first go, but i need more reach.

I have a 70-200 f4, and at some point i would like to get a 1.4TC for it, this could be the excuse i am looking for.

I'm not sure if it will still give me enough reach though. What would you do, buy a TC or rent something like a 400 f5.6?

I'd probably hire a lens as a 1.4x would make your 70-200 a 280/5.6 at full zoom. The extra reach of a 400 or something like that would be much more useful...

I shot an airshow last year with a 70-200 F4 L with a 1.4 extender. I was happy with most of my shots, although the light conditions were poor. The IQ from that lens is good, so cropping heavily is possible.

Depends also on what other use you think you will get from the extra reach on your lens. If you think it will get very little other use then hiring may be more cost effective.

Rent the 400 5.6. Sounds like you have not had the need for the reach for the rest of the year.

Not sure if the 200 + TC will autofocus. Also you'll get some degradation in image quality.

With the 400 you will get pin sharp shots, with good quick autofocus.

And then you'll also get an addition to your 'wish list' after you have returned it!

Hire a 300mm 2.8 and take the converter with you. That will be plenty. Its what i use most of the time at airshows.

Kev.

Cheers for that, very helpful thread.

Must admit, i am leaning towards hiring a lens.

I did forget to mentio originally, i am using a 40d so still have the crop factor to apply if that influences anyones advice.
