Anyone know what the deal is with this? I'm tempted to sign up to it but not sure how it will affect my images that i have with Alamy (all of which are 'licenced')

Any advice appreciated

I've not any personal experience of this but I have read about it on Alamy. On the Alamy forums there does appear to be general concern about the lack of information that Alamy have provided about what constiutes Novel use.

One of the bigest concerns is that with the Novel use agreement Alamy have the right to grant a special licence for a small fee without consulting you, ultimately meaning that the price you get significantly reduced (especially as Alamy charge more % for the "admin" effort). Ultimately people are concerned about this being microstock in all but name. This isn't helps by Alamy who have done nothing to quell these fears.

If you do sign up and decide that it's just not right for your business you can opt out but only in a certain month of the year (IIRC it's April).

I suppose if you don't know about it you can't help :p

However, to enlighten you Alamy is a Stock Photography Website and "Novel Use" is a way you can agree for Alamy to sell your photos that is beyond the standard "Royalty Free" and "Licenced" methods they offer.

I have googled this Novel Use Alamy as it has just caught me out. I looked into my account today and see I have sold over 40 images for less than a dollar an image, some at 4 dollars. It has come as a shock because I do not remember opting in and will be opting out on Monday.

It states the images can be used for educational and social network sites, and are only available at sizes up to 5 meg. I have a design company and I can work with a 5 meg file for a half page advert fine one increased in size in photoshop, and lets be honest, you cannot tell me none of these images are being used on any internet sites that we can't trace. They do not ask you to 'prove' that you are using it for a social networking site or educational purposes.

You get the impression they are looking to fill the gap with Microsites but this is incorrect, Istock pay their contricuters far more than a dollar a shot.

I for one represent one of the biggest Microsite photographers on Alamy and will be asking Alamy to opt us out of this 'untrusting' scheme.
