Can you please provide some guidance concerning the purchase of a high quality all in one compact camera which will allow control over depth of field, lighting, and speed with a mega zoom? I do not want a DSLR. Is there something on the market that can come close to competing with the professional equipment? I travel a lot and need something better than a point and shoot but do not want the weight and aggravation of the extra equipment. Your advice will be appreciated. Thanks.

Sony RX100, best pocket-able camera there is, but its not a mega zoom.

rx10? Rx100. The compacts with mega zoom have tiny sensors, which means control of dof is laughable.

as for competing with pro gear your limited really. Sigma dp line is small and mighty, but you need a lot of batteries, and no zoom. But if you can crop then it'll beat a lot of stuff

I suppose it all hangs on your definition of "compact" but I suspect that requirements of being compact, having a mega zoom and allowing control over depth of field whilst providing professional rivalling results are simply too much to ask.

Personally I'd look closely at the newly introduced Panasonic LX100. It isn't compact and it doesn't have a mega zoom but arguably and to a degree it will give you some control over depth of field and in the hands of a competent user I'm pretty sure that it'll be capable of results which could be lost amongst images taken much more expensive and physically larger kit.

Good luck choosing.
