Question:
Is it just me that gets annoyed when people turn up with a 5D, D3 etc and start asking what flash will work and will so and so lens fit? Oh and what mode to use for weddings... :bang:

Answers on the back of a CF card please. :wave:
 
I have to agree. On other non photography boards I use, often people ask what camera they should buy "I have £1500 or £2K to spend" and then ask if has a "fireworks mode" :D

It does my head in that people think spending thousands on kit will instantly produce award winning photographs with zero effort. It could be of course, that I am simply jealous that they have cash to splash on the lastest gear!!

thats the thing , people say the have £1000 and would have upgraded from a POINT & SHOOT! and go out and buy a d300 or 50d etc and think this should produce nice images. its a bit like saying if i buy a really expensive car then i'll pass my driving test and be an excellent driver.
 
But if you had £1000 and wanted a new camera wouldn't you want to spend it all on the best one you could afford. You've still got to learn how to use the camera whether it costs you £300 or £3000.

Come on guys be honest - if you had that cash to spare would you really only spend half thinking you can get something better later? I don't think so.

And what are these forums for if not for sharing knowledge?

However, I must say I am surprised some don't spend a little time reading about their kit before they ask the questions - even when they bought an entry level DSLR. One is sometimes tempted to say go and read the manual :)
 
You have to bear in mind that for some people at least, they have a genuine willingness to want to learn but don't want to worry about upgrading. Personally, as a beginner if I could of afforded something like a D3 as well as some decent lenses etc I would of and learnt to use it. IF you've got the cash why not? If they then learn to use it to its full potential they haven't wasted a penny. They may ask silly questions, but at least they are asking which means that they are willing to learn, always a good thing!

You've then got the people that have walked into a camera shop, said I have this to spend and want a DSLR and they shop has ripped their arm off and sold them something completely overkill. There fault for not researching better.

Yes, you will get the odd pleb that's blown £2k on a camera just because he wants to show off and has no idea how to use it, but there is no need to get annoyed. Just chuckle to yourself. :lol:
 
It doesn't really bother me too much. I am not the most technically gifted person in the world and sometimes wonder about some of the discussions on here. You often see people giving advice as though it is fact and there is no other possible way to do something.

You also see many dicussions where people can explain the inner working of a lens or camera and how amazingly brilliant it is and so much better than anything else, only to see it up for sale within a few weeks because there is front focussing, back focussing, distortion, or choose any other number of problems. That is cool for them. Can't really say I spend too much time looking at my gear for faults I just like using it. However, it's people's choice. Just like choosing to buy whatever they want is their choice. What makes this place pretty good is the amount of opinions expressed in response to a query. The fun is in trying what works best for you.

I have built up my gear over the years by selling prints and reinvesting the money in gear and also donating some to charity. I have some decent gear and maybe I do not know how to use it to it's full capability. :shrug: I think I know quite a bit now! People seem to like what I do because it is them that have paid for my upgrades. I learn new stuff about photography almost every day and that is part of the enjoyment

You do get some people asking basic questions (not stupid questions as per another thread), but that's life. If people want to help fine, if not move along.

same as having a point and click and asking how to do this and that. just a case of them not RTFM, camera is irrelanvent

I finally got round to reading my manual after 2 months and you know what, most of it means nothing too me :D

Reading lots of online guides especially those on morguefile.com :)

While I agree that reading the manual would help, I'm not annoyed when someone with a basic camera asks a basic question - that seems fairly reasonable to me. Its the guys who spend a fortune on kit that they have no idea how to use that annoy me. Even then I don't mind helping out by replying to well thought out questions - the really irksome ones are those who think that good camera = good photos...

the manual tells you how to operate the camera or at least it has done for my 4 canon dSLRs lol


They don't tell you how to take good pictures etc
 
It's obviously not you, as others on the thread seem to be the same. Why do you get annoyed? Is it because they haven't paid their dues in the same way you have? If they use the camera I don't care what they spent on it, it is being used for it's purpose. It only annoys me when people buy stuff and leave it in a cupboard never to be used, whether it be a point and shoot or a 5DII.

My first camera was (still is) a 400D. When I first got it I didn't know why I should shoot RAW, what the difference in metering modes was, and why I should worry about white balance.

I didn't post on forums for a start exactly because of this type of thread. People who think that no one else apart from those with experience should be asking questions, or even posting on forums like this.

As for the sly dig at the Woman asking for help on which mode to use at a wedding. Grow up! She has 3 bookings on the back of her first, and will probably go on to be a successful wedding photographer, rather than sit here bitching on a forum about people annoying her.

Have you never asked a stupid question about cameras? Or tried to push yourself out of your comfort zone? To me that is the worst type of photographer. One who doesn't try through fear of failure.
 
hehe! To some extent I can see the OP's point but there's no point getting p*ssed off with it! Everyone starts somewhere even if they don't really go anywhere with it!

I started with a D300, why I bought fairly high up the food chain was that I didn't want to have to upgrade so soon after buying it. I thought that maybe I'd outgrow the camera too quickly and then have the bother of having to get another. Hopefully it'll be a while before I feel I've out grown my D300:)

And heck why not jump in at the deep end - more features to play with and learn!

Plus I like asking what maybe stupid questions - the answers make sure I learn and don't ask the same question again- tis the reason I like this forum :)

Yes, I now know what every option and button does, but that doesn't mean I really know how to use them or when to use them :)

My point is that people asking questions to learn isn't a bad thing and that it isn't the reading that is important, it's the understanding of what you've read that is :D

This thread wasn't supposed to be attacking new photographers, far from it. It was actually supposed to be light hearted but now its starting to feel a little too much like trolling :shrug:

I don't doubt at all that a big part of my annoyance is jealousy or resentment that I had to "climb the ladder" through my photography work rather than just being able to "buy the best" when I started though on reflection I did learn a lot through this far more evolutionary approach, in some respects the guys with too much money to burn actually miss out on a good learning experience.

I wasn't taking a dig at anyone in particular, in fact I think the mode for weddings question was a reasonable one and we all have to start somewhere, so long as everyone involved knows the situation I have no problem with newbies covering weddings.

I've asked many stupid questions and push myself constantly, what annoys me is when there is a massive disparity between equipment and ability, just seems like a waste to me. :thinking:
 
I've always been the type of person who buys the very best I can afford even if it's beyond my current ability, at least I know then I have the luxury of being able to grow into it iykwim.

Cheaper in the long run than upgrading every couple of months.
 
I think I come under that heading, but think I still benefit from the better sensor and glass,
I don't splash cash, I am quite careful with it........... and I enjoy what I do with my gear, isn't that the important part of a 'hobby'
 
Look on the bright side, these are the same people who take up motorcycling and then go out and buy something that does 200mph as soon as they can after they pass their test, so usually they're only around for a week or two anyway :naughty:

I have loads of gear and not a flaming clue how to use it to its full potential,being honest,I bet not many do............:shrug:

I maybe the type of person you were referring to, my first Dslr is my 40d not quite in the league of a D3 etc. but it was a substantial investment for me. along with the flash gun and my 50mm 1.4.

However I have found that the challenge of learning is what I love about photography, the internet with it's many forum's has been invaluable and continues to be.

The wealth of info is only available due to the input of people who contribute, and for their time to answer my "stupid questions" I am truly grateful.

I personally think it doesn't matter if you own a cheap camera or the best money can buy, as long as you use it try to achieve the best from it.

It would be more annoying if someone bought the best gear, never asked questions then just used it like a point and shoot.

Firearms certificate holder(.243 and.308) and shotgun license holder for numerous things.

Probably not :naughty::lol:
 
I wonder if the D3x has a fireworks mode......might buy one to find out!

That is the problems with forums, you can never tell when someone is being light hearted. You can see from my response how I read it.

It may seem a waste when people have equipment above their level, but if they can afford it good luck to them. I know my 400D would have been a 5DII if funds allowed, and I would have grown to the camera and using it to the ability it deserves, which is what I hope most people who buy one as a first camera do.

But if anyone knows of someone who doesn't I'l take that 5DII off their hands at a very reasonable price:thumbs:
 
Jealousy is a terrible thing - and generally leaves you unhappy and the other person no worse off in my experience :nono:

The cost of the equipment doesn't bother me at all - what does bug me is lazyness. A lot of people seem to make no effort to find things out for themselves before posting a message. With the search function here, whole internet, books and magazines etc at our disposal then really basic questions can come across as "I can't be bothered to find this out for myself - could you do it for me?" which does irritate me. I suppose if you have spent more it does seem less understandable that you wouldn't put dome effort behind what has been a significant purchase - but then define "significant purchase". £500 is a significant amount to me whereas splashing £2000 is nothing to some lucky people!

If you have made an attempt to understand something and still need a bit of help then fair enough - regardless of how much your kit cost.
 
I don't think there are many who routinely use their gear to the full potential no matter what the camera.

When you think about the sheer range of subjects available to each of us how many of us truly push our equipment? Low light work, high speed sports, complicated lighting rigs, people pics, nature, macro, landscape.

How many of us are competent in each and every genre? Yet our equipment, in many cases allows us that.

I have to admit that some (only a very minor amount) of questions do annoy me because of the sheer laziness of people. (Not just TP but all internet forums are the same) If you want to know the answer to a question, how about researching it yourself? You might just find that reading up on a subject rather than relying on others to provide it for you actually adds to your own knowledge.

I buy a lot of books for the same reason, I like to read and absorb rather than ask others to do it for me.

But then, I've always been odd :)

i agree, i was terrible with aperture, shutter etc and my point and shoot was always on auto, but when i bought my a300 i learned and i never even read any books i just watched a couple of youtube vids and i went out and took pics ive had the camera for 4 months and learned all about aperture and shutter and that the modes i use.
