Alpa Cameras?

The charity where I work has just had an Alpa camera donated. None of us had heard of them so we put it on eBay and bidding has gone to £500+ almost immediately. Anyone know anything about them? There is a not hugely helpful website and some information on line saying they went into liquidation some years ago but they remain a bit of a mystery to me.

Don't sell the camera for too cheap, take time to get a decent valuation put on it and get the most you can for charity. It looks to be in excellent condition. Don't let some dealer gouge you either. As said earlier the film section has very good knowledge in there, although Alpa are quite rare, but Leica (or better) quality supposedly.
 
I recall the name but little else, so I did a google and there were some usefull links, seems its an acquired taste but seems they go for a lot of money. Looks like your hospice has received something very worthwhile and I cant think of a better recipient.

Looks like you have the 1.9 lens, which according to the websites is the one to have. As above dont let it go too cheap, at the moment I'd say £500 is way too cheap.

looks very interesting and i hope you manage to get some worthy funds for you charity .. just a shame the EBAY fatcats will inevitably take a big slice,
 
Thanks all, it is up to £520 now with 5 days still to go so should get a good price hopefully.
To give them some credit, eBay have a special arrangement with charities so we get the full value of the sale.
We do get money for the most surprising things, sold a pair of (truly knackered, one lens missing) Carl Zeiss binoculars for about £400 last week! :)
 
nice camera if it was me i would pull it from the auction and re ad it and ad a reserve best of luck i hope you get the full wack for it
 
If you are going to keep the auction going it might be worth opening up shipping to USA and Japan to attract collectors with deep pockets.

Edit - with a lovely lens too, I wouldn't mind getting my hands on that!

Think they only made 1,000 of them. You can tell whoever owned it knew about cameras and cherished it, glad it went for a decent amount for a good cause.
 
£2,010! We are delighted with that, plus with the Zeiss binoculars at £655 it was a good week for us on eBay! Thanks for all your feedback and the good wishes, it is a great cause. Keep an eye on the site, we don't often have Alpa cameras but we do have some other nice bits, recently sold a minty Nikon FE.
 
The buyer was from Italy in the end, funnily enough the Zeiss binoculars also went to an Italian buyer (not the same one as the camera).
 
Hope they are using a courier, the Italian postal service can be a little 'unreliable' you could say.
