Alternative to X10

I've £300 quid to spend on a small camera. I'm fairly sure the X10 is my number one choice, but I wondered if there was anything else out there to consider. I want a hotshoe and I'm open to a used M43 or something, but know nowt about them.
 
You should be able to get something like the Olympus E-PM1 with kit lens (nice sharp lens!) for that sort of money. You Won't get a view finder though!
 
Have you had one? How does it compare for IQ?
 
Not had one but IQ should be better due to much larger sensor. I had an E-PL2 and that was very sharp!! The X10 does have a certain look about the files which is very pleasing to the eye though.
 
I think the Oly has a 1/2000 max shutter speed too.
 
Can also look at the Panasonic G1/2/3 or GF1/2 up the budget very slightly and the GX1 is VERY nice.

Cheers. I was all over the G3 until I found out it wont sync faster than 1/125th ish with my radio triggers. That's one of the biggest draws of the X10 for me.
 
Dean you're really gonna notice a massive difference in quality going to a compact, try sticking to the larger sensor compact systems like the m4/3.

It's only gonna be my walkabout camera, mate. Will have a DSLR for work. :)
 
Oh good, not sure if these would work with your triggers but are good cameras, xz-1, lx5, Griv, S100, hx20v. Worth having a look at Samsung nx series also.

Dean...like you I have D700 for work. I love the thing.
Wanted small, light, full featured camera as an always with me...got an X10, mate it does it all.

(When I get serious it's with film, yep I'm an old fart)

X10 is the one.

It is amazing. Fantastic lens, hotshoe works great, amazing pictures and all the controls you could want - then there's the manual zoom...

I'm on my phone but at the bottom of one of my recent articles is an image I took a couple of days ago.

I used a flash gun with shoot through brolly and my X10 remote triggering the flash, have to say I didn't miss my DSLR.

I bought my X10 as a 'I can't be bothered taking the 1d' occassional use camera. It fits this bill perfectly. It is a frustratingly clumsy camera to use, AF is lousy, optical viewfinder is practically useless and the controls on the back are horrible. Despite all this I love it! It's weird. It does force you to slow right down and take your time, but you can set it up perfectly for street photography especially if you use zone focusing. I don't bother using any of the special EXR functions at all, some get good results but I prefer a more 'old style' approach. I often have it set to jpeg only rather than utilising RAW, mainly to force me to get it right in camera rather than relying on PP, it is afterall just for fun.

I would seriously recommend you buy at least three spare batteries (they're about a fiver from Amazon)

Anyone thinking about this camera I would say provided you can see past the limitations/faults then you will love it. There has been a lot said about the sensor and the infamous 'orbs' but I have yet to have this problem. Even if they do show up at some point I'm not fussed as for what I use the camera for it wouldn't matter in the slightest.

If you get one, buy a half leather case for it (you can get faux leather ones for about a tenner, they're actually rather good) and it will transform the handling of the camera. People bling them up with special (and very expensive) grips and 'soft shutter' buttons and so on. Not sure why but each to their own.

Another vote for the X10 here, I'm also a D700 user. I tend to use it more than the Nikon as it's far more portable, and the image quality is very good. I thought I'd use the viewfinder, but I've not, it's rubbish. The twisting zoom is great though, and I'm loving the sweep panorama function, even though it's tricky to use.

I can't get my RF603's to work but they were advertised as Nikon fit. Perhaps that where the problem lies.
 
I think I've decided that the X10 it is. The whole point of picking up a little camera was to have fun with it and reading what I've read and the way owner enthuse about it I'd be daft not to. :D

Still doesn't work!

Mounted the RF-603 on the D3100 and both the power & flash trigger light illuminate. Take the shot and the off camera flash fires. Mount the trigger on the X10 and only the power light illuminates - not the flash trigger indicator light. Take the shot and guess what - no off camera flash.

So there you go, the Yongnuo RF-603N does not work on the X 10, would be happy to be proved wrong though.
 
Isn't there some kind of setting you have to adjust?
 
I've had a wee Google and it appears the Nikon version doesn't work with the X10.

Thanks, I can now get on and enjoy this fabulous camera- can't really see me needing off camera flash - bought the X10 as a lightweight walkabout to use without a bag load of accessories.

RF602's work but 603's don't appear to.
