I recieved my Tamron 17-55 today. When I got a chance to look at it this evening I found 2 white specs in the lens on the plastic part next to the lens inside the front. :'(

At first I thought they were maunfacture marks but now I'm not sure. Do I return the lens?
 
The only way I can think to explain it is it's on the platic that goes away from you as you zoom, that expands, elongates. You have the first lens that you could touch and the the next lens. The are next to, but not on that.

After looking again they are more like little circles. Silver with black dots in the middle
 
TBH I can't see how they would effect any photos but I am a fussy b****r. And I'm one of those people that always thinks of what happens should you ever sell it.

This is a forum, and he is unsure so canvassing opinion. Probably the reason he's asked.

I'd probably send it back.
 
Some here will say keep it, just a bit of dust, others say get rid. He's already concerned and bothered by it so for his own piece of mind should just return it, not have people try persuade him otherwise.
 
You're right, I am canvassing opinion. I really don't know what to think. I'll phone the shop in the morning. As for the smart phone I'm affraid I only have a crappy blackberry with a 2 megapixle cam. I'll see what I can do with better light. Thanks for you help everyone.
 
Since the forum gallery size limit for pix is 800x800 px, 2MP is more than enough!

Ooops, I didn't think of that when I marked two of my lenses with a spot of my ex's glow in the dark nail polish (so that I could swap them in darkness and avoid mangling the lens mount)...... :(

I'm very hopeful that it'll come off though :D

Yes that's my mistake, it's 17-50 (my old lens was 18-55 hence me writing 55).

I spoke to the supplier and they have said to use it and check the pics. No problems as yet. I think they are manufacture marks for alignment or something, thy don't look like dust.

So I sent it back to the shop who where very good about it and sent me a new one...with dust in it. :bang: Back on the phone tomorrow it is then, grrrr. I asked them to check for the white marks before posting so you'd have thought they'd have notice the dust. Should've paid more and got a Sigma or Canon lens. :'(
 
I had a Tamron 17-50 and it was my worst lens ever for collecting dust internally as the camera end is very badly sealed. Luckily it can be easily cleaned by holding a the pipe from a hoover over the open end and working the zoom backwards and forwards a couple of times.

Sigma and Canon lenses also get dust inside them too....

That is really interesting.

The shop have been brilliant. I told them about it and sent it back. I asked them to check the next one before posting and it's mint. The first thing I did was put a UV filter on it.

you also know that filter will probably degrade the image quality far more than any dust would right?
 
... and in a few weeks or so, there will be dust in there. Its a fact of life, when you zoom in, the lens expands and sucks in air. If the air isnt filtered ( and its not in a Tamron lens) its only a matter of time before it starts sucking in a few specks of dust.
I had the same lens, bought it used and dust free and kept it for a year or more. When I came to sell it, there were some dust specs in there, but, unless its very bad, you wont notice anything on the images.
I was told years ago, never to look too closely into a lens, and whatever you do, never shine a torch in there. You will see loads of stuff in there that you didnt want to see.....
