It's not like he's the only sufferer. I sold my old 40D for £400 and replaced it with a camera costing 5x the price. I may be the only member of my family that can see any difference at all in the output, but what do they know! :D

Just dont want him buying lots of top end UV filters for all those nice lenses ;)

The way I look at is is this I bought the D7000 3 months ago for ~700 quid and sold it for 600 quid and had a hell of great time with it that was worth way more that a 100 quid
I will do the same with the D3s until something else comes out that I take a fancy too.
I Havant spent the last 32 years working on Oil Rigs so that I have to watch my pennies, I do that kind of work (14 years in the North Sea, not everyones cup of tea) so that I can afford a few toys, and maintain 4 wife's, and drink beer at 6am if I want:):):)

I've just upgraded to the D7000 and I can say I'm a complete novice but I'll have tremendous fun getting to know it and I'm guessing you'll have even more getting to know the D3s
 
You will love the D7000

I ended up getting all the prime zooms and now looking at the 200/400 f4 for my love of shooting golfers, I just wish the D3s motor drive when shooting in high speed was a wee bit more quite as it sounds like a AK47 going off in burst mode:):):)
 
What oilrig do you work at and what do you do exactly? I want to be as rich as you...

Oh I do love (hate) when people with no clue about the equipment have way too much money to spend on it...

For the last time, they're NOT prime lenses. "Prime" is not photography lingo for "good" or "professional", it is the term for a fixed-focal length lens e.g. a 50mm f/1.4 is a prime, a 24-70mm f/2.8 is a zoom.

They might not be prime to you but they are prime Zooms to me.
And my next one is the 200/400mm f4 ZOOM (just ordered it) and maybe the 600mm PRIME for taking portraits. why you may ask..........."because I can"

That's like someone who likes cold weather saying that the weather in winter is 'hot', or vice versa and saying the weather in summer is 'cool'. Just accept that Prime = fixed focal length and find a different way to express that you think those lenses are good.

600mm prime for portraiture... All that money and you have to stalk people for portraits?

I forgot about this thread until someone reminded me about it on the new D4 thread.
Anyway glad I never got the 200/400mm prime as the last time I was out taking pictures on the golf course I got into a argument with a official at the tournament about taking pictures. There were about 60 folks stood around the tee and everyone......say that again EVERYONE had a camera but this stupid fat person started busting my bal%$ about taking pictures so I have gone off the idea of being a golf photographer, my next adventure is race cars/bikes so will be seeing if I can get close enough to just use the 70/200mm.

The guy that I buy all my camera equipment from has a 2nd hand (like New) 400mm f2.8 (PRIME) for sale at ~4 grand but I worry that I wont have the zoom capabilities.............sure looks like a nice lens though
 
The 400 f2.8 lens is a very nice piece of kit. It's a specialist sports lens and you will need a good tripod for it. If you have the cash get it. If you don't like it you will always be able to nice it on for not much loss
