Am i msking too big of a deal with this?

I bought a new 100mm 1.8 canon lens off of eBay from a canon dealer out of state. It arrived on time and all seemed good until I realized there was no warranty card. I contacted the dealer and ask for one. Their reply was that there was a one year warranty from them on the lens and that they never implied there was any other warranty. According to eBay "new" means everything that comes on the box when you buy it from the store. The card comes in the box and I never thought to ask about it because I understood what new means on eBay. I wasn't asking about their warranty I don't care about that. I wanted the Canon warranty. That's why I bought new. I told them to supply me with one or I would return it. I don't think they are going to do it. Do you think I am over reacting? Should I be worried about not having a warranty card?
 
Things may be different in the US, but in the UK the warranty card has no significance. What Canon UK wants to see for warranty work is your "Proof of Purchase". i.e. your sales receipt, showing that your goods were bought and supplied within country and appropriate taxes paid. Since lenses should have international warranty (supposedly) I guess it need not have been bought in country, but a sales receipt is the requirement

If you are concerned I suggest you talk to Canon. They should be able to tell you what you need.

Yeah I think you may be correct. I ask them straight out if it was in an email and they didn't give me a straight answer. They said something like they have both and they ship what is available at the time. They go on to say they have no way of knowing what they ship. Yeah right, I guess they don't keep track of their inventory if they don't know what they ship. I'm disappointed in myself for not doing a better job of checking this out before hand. I'm really worried now because I have already used it and I'm afraid that they won't take it back.
 
Heh, funny! Was reading about something else on another site, and saw this: "Canon USA warranty cards are red or blue and clearly states Canon USA, Inc."!
Since they didn't send the card, it most probably is a grey import...

Why not contact Canon USA and give them the serial number? They for sure can tell!
 
I wouldn't worry about it. As long as you have a receipt you will be OK. If the lens is Grey Import then you will have to deal with the seller and his Warranty (Good Luck!) but if it is through the correct Canon distributor in the US then they can match the serial numbers and get the work done under Warranty.
 
The long and short is if you want a "new" lenses with warranty don't buy off ebay. Use an authorised dealer. Ebay is great for deals but you have got to take the listing with a grain of salt and check it over when you receive it.

Try contacting canon over there and get them to check the serial number, if its a grey import they should be able to tell you, get them to email confirmation if it is a grey import then contact the seller again asking to return for a full refund (if thats what you want) if you have any problem report to ebay for miss selling as he didn't list the lens as an import but listed it as brand new USA stock and get them to rectify the situation.

This if you really want to.

Or you can accept you got a grey import lens, which carries an international warranty anyway. It's only cameras that have country specific warranties.
 
Thanks for all the input . I found out that it is indeed a gray market lens. The seller has yet to admit it out right but that's another story. I have the return info and I will return it this weekend. I'll turn around and buy a u.s.a lens and get the warranty.

That's probably the best option if you want to be sure of where you stand. I think B & H indicate USA or Imported for each item on their website, and explain what this means. Quite a good idea.

Sorry but that's not true at all. Almost All my equipment was bought off eBay from a canon dealer and have had nothing but a great experience. Unfortunately I let my guard down on this one and now have to deal with it.
 
Well I am going to contact Canon to see if when this lens is out of warranty will they work on it if I pay the bill. If they will then I have no problem keeping it. If they will not I have already got the okay to send it back. Thanks for all the help ladies and gentleman, It is appreciated.
