wont hold the camera still at all !
not with a zoom on anyway.

how much do you need to spend before they are solid ?

not bothered about weight

My personal experience is:

You pay for what you get

Havent found a good cheap tripod anywhere, ever. Just one of those things that you will pay more for a good one

:agree:

I went through about 5 cheapy's, until I finally listened to the excellent advice on here and bought a Manfrotto :D

Tricky my tripod and head set up is rock solid, and relatively lightweight, however you really do not want to know how much it cost.

You need to look at the Redsnapper stuff on here, Joe is a member on the forum, and I think there is a discount available to TP members.

You should get something below £100

I paid a fortune (well it was to me at the time) on a Gitzo tripod over 30 years ago, I gave it to a friend a few years ago, and it is still working perfectly.

it seems it's the head / mounting bit that is worst on mine. the legs seem ok for a light weight one.

can you get the heads separately ?

I managed to get a star 42 tripod for £10, this holds a basic camera and medium zoom. Unfortunately anything heavier just requires a better tripod.
The redsnapper ones are often talked about as being decent on this forum. I believe they are around £100 for a basic set though.

Mine was £20 on sale at Argos, and it does the job just fine :D

Ok I hardly use it, but when I do, it does the job! Id rather spend the cash on another body :D

You're best off spending £ 50+ on a tripod. The cheap ones are just cack.

:agree:

Anyone who tells you that their 30 bob tripod is excellent quality hasn't used a decent one. Now, where's EG and his £900 Gitzo one

EDIT: Comment not aimed at anyone in particular, before I get a Betty-shaped boot from the post above

Actually these cheap tripods are not really cost effective in the long run as you will still want to upgrade.
You almost always get what you pay for your money.

Obviously it depends on what you are hoping to mount on it. My Hama Star was fine for my G5. If you have a lot of weight, you need to spend more.

But I am sure I could use a poor one if I had no option. Not going to last forever or be the best thing since sliced bread, but probably better than hand held if it doesn't topple over.

Spend more or try before you buy.

Graham

I have a cheap Jessops one and it's rubbish! I told my Wife I wanted a tripod as a Christmas present and sadly she bought me one, if only I'd known!

I have a Gitzo and an Acratech head (total around £800) - if you think you can get that for sub 30 - good luck - you won't. Buy a great tripod once in a lifetime - buy a cheap one every year.

Why would you trust hundreds of pounds of equipment on a £9.99 tripod? :cuckoo:

The Redsnapper tripods do get good reviews from alot of members for a reason.

I was quite happy with it when I wasn't using it LOL !

just went to try some shots of the moon ... old 500/4.5 soligor and there is too much weight for the mount

the 135/2.8 shakes with the shutter ... yes I know about mirror lock up, but really the tripod head is not up to it. I had to try and steady the body with two hands to get a decent shot !

tried the remote trigger n everything !

its all about more money at the end of the day isn't it :bang:

I might see about making my own !

I just checked out the £9.97 tripod on the website, I guess that's the one you mean.
The only review on there is borderline Hilarious.

Do not put expensive camera on this item!

The item I purchased was not the same as shown in the catalogue. It was probably the flimsiest piece of cheap junk I had ever purchased and was sent back for refund.

manfrotto ... red snapper .... gitzo ...

all well and good ... but I guess they all 'LOOK' like my cheap one ... 3 legs n all that :-)

spose I need to go shopping ... take my setup and give them a try.

Hope fully I will be blown away by the ones that cost nigh on a grand

jessops ?

and 'Euan' ... what's wrong with making my own  basic engineering isnt it ?

oh ... and whilst I'm at it ... anyone notice that the ground trembles a lot ??? specially near motorways (where I live :'( )

actually yes, alot more than I think it would :)

My Manfrotto is sturdy, steady but lightweight - and the head won't shake about when a big lens and body are attached (Well big within reason that is!) I remember having a cheap tripod several years ago - put the camera with the zoom lens on, and within a minute it was pointing at the floor... Tripod creep!!

not bothered about weight

I'd like to ensure that this is on the record. Wait until you have lugged a 'decent' tripod across a couple of hikes, hand holding each picture because it is a nause to set it up.

You may well think that i have had some bad episodes with tripods!

Chris

this is it trying to be in action.

had to tilt it 90 just to hold itself up.

You may get blown away in the wind, but a £1k tripod ought to provide a decent anchor

I have 4 <£10 tripods which are all a bit naff. I am getting a manfrotto next month with the trigger release and the cheapos will be relegated to flashes etc. The cheapo ones really are cheap for a reason :)
