Ok, i took some pics of my brothers bike today, got home stuck them on the pc and 75% are blurred !
Couldn't really see it on the lcd so i never noticed, i was using a tripod and cable release to ensure sharpness.... But after doing some close ups at F1.8 i changed shutter speed till the meter says ok but not aperture for the long shots :bang:
So am i right that this will or could account for the blurring as the DOF will be well out...right ? I know the background will be OOF but the bikes dodgy as well.

Two pics to show what i mean

I'd have thought you'd have got some sharp on the second one since its fairly square, but the first one had no chance.
Maybe a miss-focus on pic 2..?
There is no exif in the pics..

The tail unit looks in focus on the top pic, so I guess that was the point the camera's AF chose......

At f1.8 I'm not surprised he photo looks out of focus, because that is exactly what it is! I'm guessing here of course but say a 50mm focal length at f1.8 at one and a half meters would give you about 5 cm depth of field.

I would of used at least f8 at two meters for the side on shot and at least three meters for the angled shot if you wanted to ensure all of the bike was in focus.

Just out of curiosity why did you chooses f1.8. As has been said this will seriously limit your DoF.

If sharp focus front to back is important, the first place to go , given that you had it on a tripod + shutter release would be either, slower shutter speed or crank up the ISO

If you look at the ground, it is clear that the point of focus is in well camera-side of the bike. Not sure how you've managed that, but there it is.

Assuming you are using a 50mm lens at f/1.8, then at 4m distance you will have 0.45m depth of field.

It looks like a combination of things to me. The use of f/1.8 is definately hindering the DOF. Did you focus on the area you wanted (using a specific focus point other than the centre one) and take the shot or did you focus then recompose and take the shot? It also look like you have possibly shot in RAW and not done any or not enough sharpening in post processing? I had a bit of a sharpen of both and it seemed to sharpen up the area's most in focus OK anyway.
