When my 1DmkII went belly up, i decided to get a 50D and grip it, i didnt think it would feel right without one. I was right, i use it a lot but what i will say is that it doesnt feel anywhere near as nice as the 1D portrait grip. The 1D feels comfortable in the hand, the grip feels like it just needs to be there.
I will always grip my cameras now because i like the feel, plus my wrists are a little crap and twisting them all the time isnt comfortable after a while. What i do like about the grip though is that if i go on holiday, i can take it off and have a lighter walk about camera then i did with the 1D. So, really, its a big thing for me, but i can totally see that if you have never had a "full sized" body, then a grip feels odd and especially as the grips arent as nice as the moulded bodies

I had a 400D without a grip and it was fine. Small lenses and lightweight to throw in a bag and be done with it, especially when travelling NZ.
I then bought a 50D and 70-200 2.8 so bought a grip at the same time - it was a revelation! Felt great in the hand and using the portrait controls was very useful.
I then went for a 1D MkII - even better than the 50D and grip. Much comfier as it was built in to one unit and the controls were a lot more ergonomic.
Finally, I still have the 1DII but have bought a 5DII and bought a grip to go with it (thinking that having the 1D I'd need the grip to keep a consistency) but I couldn't be more wrong. I hate the grip on the 5DII - it's uncomfortable, the edges aren't as soft/flowing (as stupid as that sounds) and it just feels clunky and cheap.
I now, even with a 300 2.8, use the 5D without the grip. Have no issues with the size of lenses on it and was quite surprised at how well I got on with the combo.
