I've just bought my Dad a Kindle for his birthday and wanted to download a couple of books for him to get him started.

As I bought it, it's currently registered to me and I was going to degister me and register my Dad but while it is registered to me, I can download a couple of books for him. But this means he will only be able to read the books while it's registered to me.

Is there any way I can get him a couple of books and then de-register it

Has any of that made sense :bonk:
 
Kindle books are tied to the machine if I'm thinking correctly, so it shouldn't matter who the is registered to.

However I would say that you don't need to be buying books for your Kindle, there are literaly thousands available for free on the web if you know how to find them.

It's also worth looking for a free bit of software called Calibre which makes geting books onto your kindle a doddle including converting many formats so the kindle can read them.

Some PDF's don't translate to the Kindle too well but most are okay.

If you have Firefox on your PC then download Chatzilla, I'll do a post for you later on how to find most books you want.

If you get really stuck I'll send you a DVD with over 7500 books on it :D
 
Thanks for the reply Chris. I had a quick look at it earlier and thought I could only download books from it and it's currently registered to me. And the rate my Dad reads books, I don't want that!!! I don't think I'll be setting him up to download from anywhere but Amazon. Too much hassle to try and explain it all to him. I'll probably do it on mine when I get one at Christmas!

Going to have a look at it on the coach (if it ever arrives!) Will probably download one on my journey home and that will do him for a couple of days.

downloaded two books for him yesterday - one was 69p and one was £1!!!

He's also looked round the Amazon shop and found loads of free ones he likes so not too bad.

He does have a pc - we'll probably look into it all when a) we've got a bit more time and b) he's got used to it

The only thing I'll say is that the navigation buttons are a bit small for him and I thought there was a backlight on them, so need to buy a new case with integrated booklight I suppose?

I think they're great though and can't wait for mine to arrive at Christmas :D

Do you mean there could be a problem with copyrite.

To put your mind at rest all the books I have are free, including copyrite. The books I have are in the free domain and as such are available for anyone to download.
 
Just checking ;)

I didn't think you were advocating wholesale downloading of copyrighted works, but the statement "There are tons of places to download books for free", could suggest it/be interpreted like that.

You could try here, these are copyright free books available for the kindle and formatted for the kindle.

It might also be useful to use this program, Calibre, this allows you to convert other formats of books to kindle format as well as organising and uploading books to your kindle.
