Anyone know how this CPU compares with modern processors speed-wise?

5-year-old PC is slower than I'd like and am wondering if I can get away with just adding an SSD, or if I need to replace the CPU and mobo.

The CPU in my firewall is almost as powerful as that.......

Upgrade time IMHO.
 
I think it's time to put that out to grass :)
 
Even though I only use it for browsing, Word/Excel, bit of web design and photo editing? No interest in gaming or video editing or other heavy duty stuff
 
Think hard, it's not going to be just the cpu and mobo but the memory, possibly hard drives and cd rom too if the mobo you get has no ide connectors.

Have you ever wiped the hard drive and started fresh on that machine? it might make a difference for you and it would be a cheap option :)
 
:cool:I used a 4200+ as main pc before I built present one last year.

It's still in use as a media center so I wouldn't say you are down and out just yet:p

Might be worth trying Hugh's suggestion.

Otherwise, get yourself an SSD and you can always use it in a newbuild if you are unhappy.
 
I've one like that in an office PC with 4gb ram and it runs great with Windows 7. A clean install on a new SSD should be pretty good.
 
These days, really REALLY slow.

For sake of comparison, the Athlon 64 X2 was made to look slow in it's day by the Core 2 Duo - these days a modern Celeron will outpace the very fastest Core 2 Duo's in a lot of applications.
 
Another possible upgrade, i believe that AM3 socket processors such as the phenom II dual and quad cores are backward compatible and should fit your AM2 socket Motherboard, and can be picked up fairly cheap. Infact you could get lucky as i did and get a dual core which is able to be unlocked to a quad core :)

These are still good processors but again your motherboard will limit the overall system due to DDR2 RAM etc.

Athlon 64 X2 4200+ is Socket 939.

Yup. Bios support for something newer will be needed - even if the chip will physically fit (which is why I upgraded my server board a few months ago - ready to get a low power AM3+ processor in the future, whilst still using an AM2 CPU for the moment...)

Interesting option, never thought of that. Socket is AM2, mobo is Gigabyte GA-M57SLI-S4, will have to do some research.
 
It will be a tad faster... but with bottom end i3s hitting 3-4k on the same benchmark, I'd suggest saving the £40 towards a new PC...
 
The Phenom will be a cheaper upgrade assuming it fits your mobo. (the intel won't of course)and you can overclock the black editions too. If you were buying everything new, I'd go with an Intel though (personally, I prefer the i5s but it depends on your budget).
