Not sure if this is just come from no where or deep inside I just don't feel happy. Thinking of moving my 5D1 and 24-105L and use to fund a 7D and a 17-50Ish 2.8 of some sort.

Main reason is top end ISO along with the more modern features. Anyone done this swap and have advice? Basically the funds of the camera and lens have to cover the move... So any other suggestions instead would be good also :)
 
Will a 7D be better than a 5Dc at higher ISO's? I don't know as I've never used a 7D and whilst I'd normally tend to ignore internet chatter there does seem to be a lot of internet talk of the 7D being... less than fantastic at the higher ISO's.

Personally I'm very happy with the image quality my 5D gives at ISO 3200. The catch is of course that that's the highest it goes.

I don't know what features you want, personally I don't need much in the way of features so they're a mystery to me.
 
I have no comparison for the 5D at high iso but the 60D / 7D sensor does like the exposure to be correct at higher iso values also.

But there is no reason why they cannot be used at 6400iso, I have used my one before at that and regularly shoot 3200 with no problems.

For reference this shot on the 60D was at iso 2000, no real noise problems and detail is still extremely strong even in the full resolution picture.



a pointless crap shot but one I took to show the camera out to shoot Iso 6400 to show it controls well under good exposure, the light source here is one low power energy saving bulb using the f/1.8 50mm @ 1.8
Some detail smudging but that could be due to the fact I was mainly shooting to show that iso 6400 was usable and the cats don't often stay too still.




And not that you would ever use it but 12800 here, again not intended to be sharp but to see what noise would happen, shot in manual focus out my front window into the pitch black.




Personally I would keep the 5D in all probabillity and buy a second hand 7D or 60D

I swapped my 60D for a 7D when I started getting more into BIF shots and wanted the better AF control of the 7D. Whilst I'm very happy with the 7D at low ISO settings it does start to suffer from noise at higher ISO settings. I had to go up to ISO3200 with a Sigma 150-500 OS in a shady woods to get the SS up to capture the wildlife and TBH most of the shots were poor due to the noise.

I found the 60D handled noise much better than the 7D (due to the 7D strong AA filter I think) and was very happy using the 60D at 1600-3200. I'm waiting for the 70D to be released to see if it handles noise better and if so I'll be part exing my 7D for one. In good light the 7D is a fantastic camera though, it just depends where you're shooting. In all honesty I'd keep your 5D for a while but if you do decide to get another body then out of the 60D or 7D, if AF isn't critical to what you're shooting, I'd recommend the 60D.

Thanks for all the comments guys... I really don't know what I'm thinking! I think it's just an itch for new toys, I do find the camera good at 3200 so not sue what I'm complaining about.

Maybe an option is moving on the lens and get a 24-70 2.8 maybe the Sigma version at canon is well out of budget and then add some thing else to the collection... 14mm 2.8? Would be good for nightscapes?

The day I needed to use ISO3200 was a dull day to start with and I was trying to shoot squirrels down a pathway in a local woods. The trees were about covering the pathway and I had a 7D and Sigma 150-500 OS, which isn't exactly the fastest lens, and it was 'dusk' like under there. To get the squirrels when they were just stood about was reasonably easy to get (ISO800 and 80-100sec SS) but when they were scampering about I was struggling to get a good shot at 320sec (they go from 0-100 in about half a second :lol: ) If I had something that was noise free at ISO3200 and pushable to another stop, without it looking like I was in a sandstorm, I'd of got the shots and been a happy bunny.

The next time I went with my 5D3, same lens and only slightly better light but was able to get this shot very easily. Sigma 150-500 OS, 213mm @ f6.3, 1/250sec, ISO2500. I've got the camera set to auto iso up to 6400 and still get good shots from it. If I could get the same shots from the 7D I'd not even think about parting with it, but if the 70D can do better then for me it'll be worth it.

Thats kind of what Im saying though, the 7D is sure as hell not going to perform like a 5D3 at high ISO so is he going to be happy with the 7D shots at 3200 plus? Or will he just continue to shoot lower ISO for quality. In this sense a 7D is purely about numbers and not IQ over a 5DC..... unless he needs the fast AF and creature comforts.

Well decided on selling the 24-105 and keeping the 5D :D Think I have made the right decision for me. Will be spending the cash on a Sigma 24-70 2.8 and a Samyang 14 2.8 to cover the nightscapes :)

I have a 5Dc and, although I'd like to have a better camera, I love this beauty: old tech but excellent image quality. I have several lenses, mainly primes, but one of my favorites is the 24-105. Absolutely stunning!
I used to have the Samyang 14 and it is incredible sharp, but I decided to move to a 17-40.

So, please think well before you sell the 24-105. Maybe you could keep it and buy the Samyang later?

Haha I think I got knocked on the head... in all reality I had a long think about it and realised it wasn't the camera at fault it was my thoughts about the camera and F4 lens. So after all that I did get rid of the lens (to a friend so can always borrow it back, same one I borrow the 70-200 2.8 off) and have bought a Sigma 24-70 2.8 off the forum with cash to get the Samyang.

So I am very happy with my decisions now and if I'm not happy with the setup I can do what I have been doing for the last year... sell on and buy more :D
