An obscure question about a 5DII

I was out today with a guy who had a venerable form of Panasonic body.

He made a habit of putting liveview on before all his shots, and was able to bring up both a histogram, and the highlights alert function. I can only see these after taking the shot, but obviously it would be good to see them before I pressed the shutter.

I've played around but can't find how to get this info showing on my 5DII. Does anyone know what I'm on about, and how to get the info showing?

See page 111 of the manual. I'm not sure whether you can get highlight alerts - maybe you can, I just don't know - but you can definitely pull up the histogram.

Thank you. That works fine for the histogram. Highlights alert isn't mentioned anywhere that I can see. It's probably an obscure by product of some other setting! I'll persevere.

Highlight Alerts are enabled/disabled in the second playback (blue) menu screen. I don't know whether the alerts are displayed in Live View or only when reviewing an existing photo. They easy way to find out is to whack up the exposure and see for yourself.

Yes, I've got alerts set already. They show up when reviewing an existing shot, but it just seemed a nice idea to be able to see them beforehand. Can't seem to get it to function on liveview though.

That function doesn't exist on a 5D2, you can only see the highlights on a recorded image.

surely you can see on the lCD in live view and via the histogram if you're blowing the highlights without the need for "blinkies"

Depends on the light - the screen can be pretty hard to see if it is bright, and the histogram tells you something is blown but you might not be sure quite which bit.
