Animal Potrait Lens Advice

I've always been sceptical of the term "portrait lens" because that implies all portraits are teh same. I've taken portraits with a 14mm lens, and sometimes with a 300mm lens. It depends what I'm trying to achieve. I can't see why animal portraits would be any different. If you are talking about classic, traditional portraits then I'd probably do the same as I would for portraits of people... a slightly long lens. On a full frame camera, around 85mm, and on a crop sensor camera, a 50mm.

This was brought up in another thread a few days ago..I use the Nikon 70-200 for outside, Nikon 24-70 for in side and for effect i use the Nikon 85 f1.8G

Outside I'm at 200mm but would like more reach to be honest. If it's a dog and running fast then the further away the better so it's easier to track, but you'll want the reach so that you can get close for the detail rather than having to crop (unless you have the mighty D800).

The more reach the better. Depending on the animal I would aalways first pull out something in the region of 100-400mm.
They will behave much more natural when you are at a good distance.
Remember you are photographing hair effectively so a super sharp lens is a must IMO.

These lens advice threads are difficult. As we have no idea of your style or the sort of shots you want to acheive.
Show us shots you want to imitate or shots you have taken and want sharper and we can advise but until then its a bit like "what car shoudl I buy for getting to work ?". Where do you work, how long is the drive, is econmy important, do you need load space etc etc.
