Hi sorry if this has been answered many times previously.

I have the Nikon D3100 and after reading several threads on here I tried out the back button focus option which I really like to focusing and re-composing the shot.

I set the AE-L / AF-L button to AF lock only

However one thing I have noticed that there is no way to lock exposure now or take a meter reading. The exposure meter is not showing in the viewfinder since I changed the button.

I could set it to AE/AF lock but I am thinking this would take a exposure reading form the same position as the focus point?

Am I missing something here? Is it because I am the D3100 is an entry level camera.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Its been a while since i had the d3100 and i used bbf on it. I think metering is half press on the shutter button so meter wont show in viewfinder when you are setting focus on bb

With regard to ae lock, you could set it to the fn button on the front

Hope this helps
