Hi all,

Basically - I'm looking at getting a decent bag for my camera and lenses and whatever else. These bags aren't in any local shops, so I'm going to have to take the plunge!

I've picked out:

Tamrac Aero 80
Lowepro Primus AW
Lowepro Fastpack 250

I'm looking for a bag that will hold my 40D with 28-135 or 90-300 (70-200 f/2.8, in time, at least!!) attached and space for maybe a flash gun or a couple of other lenses, e.g. wideangle/50mm etc Also a top compartment for chargers, books etc and laptop bit for putting wallet in for security purposes and magazines/newspapers for the moment.

Something that will be compact enough for hand luggage air travel aswell.
A lot to ask, I know! But if anyone can offer up any opinions on the bags up there and whether they'd fufill the majority of what I'm looking for - that'd be fantastic. Other opinions are welcomed aswell!
Finally, I'm looking to spend around £60.

Many thanks and hopefully this didn't turn out TOO long :gag:.

I have the Primus AW and am very happy with it. Smallish camera compartment but well made.

Lowepro primu £53 at Foto Sense have a look at the Lowepro Video

Thanks for the response.

Is it a fairly bulky bag and is it awkward at all to get the camera out? Also, can you give me an idea of what you can fit in it?

Sorry for all the questions, but many thanks!

No I don't find it bulky and I like the opening to the camera compartment being in the back so I don't get the straps coverd in cr*p when I put it down. The side access to the camers takes a bit time to get the hang of but works ok as long as you don't have a grip attached.

In the camera compartment I have my 40d+17-85 and a 50mm with space for another lens when funds allow, along with remote release, spare cf cards, filters and a rocket blower.

That's good stuff, thank you very much.
Okay, well that'd do space wise for me I'd reckon.

Still scouting about though!

Thanks very much :)

Hi, I have the Lowepro Fastpack 350 in which I lug around my 20dwith grip+100-400, its a great fit, also room either side of the lens for a flash or a couple of lenses or I have my bean bag, spare batteries, cards, blower etc. the top pocket is a good size for a drink and snack etc, very comfy to carry round all day seen it for
cheapest I can find (although only a quick lookey)
£52

I was lucky a few months ago when warehouse express sold the red one for 45 or thereabouts

I know someone who has a slingshot and it doesn't have quite enough space in the top as I would like, thanks for the suggestion though!

Thank you for the info about the Fastpack - I think that is the one I'm leaning towards slightly at the moment!

Thanks very much so far everyone.

I am the owner of a Lowepro Primus AW. It is an extremely practical bag with lots of room for camera gear, and for example, a packed lunch if you are off for the day taking pics. My only gripe is the slightly small side/quick release opening which if it was not for a battery grip would be fine.

Lowepro Primus AW also going for £50 on the Bay at the moment.

I'm very close to getting either the fastpack 350 or the Primus. My concerns are that the fastpack does not have the extra straps that that the Primus has that help to distribute the weight more evenly. But I am more concerned about the comments regarding the side opening of the Primus, is it just not possible to get a camera out of the bag using this opening if it has a battery grip on or is it just a tight fit?
I've got a D300 with a grip and I really want to get this bag but if I can't use it with the grip then its back to the drawing board.

Thanks

Hi Stormcrow. I have a Nikon D200 with a grip. It does come out as a tight fit. I like to travel and I guess I would rather it be a tighter fit than too loose for the camera to be swiped unknowingly!! Although no doubt the best bag out there, I just think for pounds worth it is a real gem.

I love my Domke F3-x. Fits a 30d/24-70L and 135L with space in the pockets for a 580ex and cleaning stuff.

The only advice I would give (but didn't follow :)) would be to try before you buy.

This is a pretty good site...........lots of reviews and pictures of bags with kit in:

Thanks for that info, I don't mind it being a tight fit as long I can get it out eventually :) Looks like I'll be getting a Primus.

Lowepro Primus all the way! I use mine more than any other bag (funny how you accumulate them over the years, isn't it?) I find it a perfect size for my 40D (without grip) and 70-200 f2.8, alongside a 20-40 f2.8 and either a speedlight or occasionally my nifty fifty. It's easy to get the camera out in a hurry if you need, but still plenty secure. In the top compartment there is lots of space for chargers, books etc, and it's perfect for taking as a day bag or on holidays when the missus insists you don't take every piece of camera equipment you own ("Because IT'S A HOLIDAY!" apparently ;) ) Another thing not to be forgotten (although it sadly is on most bags) is a water bottle holder on the side. The outer compartment, although not secure, is ideal for carrying a lightweight jacket/ hoody/ jumper etc. (apparently it's designed for carrying climbing gear) I also take mine out sometimes when I go mountain biking as I can fit my camelback bladder in the outside pack and still take my camera gear, food etc. for the day.

Haha :)

Many thanks, that's answered a lot of questions! Thank you very much.

I've got the Lowepro Fastpack 350 and I'm going to replace it. It's a versatile enough bag but I find the lens pockets are too deep and so all my primes (which most of my lenses are these days) just rattle about inside it. It's got bags (ha ha!) of room though. Actually, if you want to save yourself a couple of quid, you can have mine for a tenner plus postage. It's in good enough nick although the waste strap is very slightly knackered at the seam.
