Another "Canon body upgrade" thread

Hi All,

I know these kind of questions get asked a lot, but any options and comments would be greatly appreciated :thumbs:

I have been using my Canon 450D camera for a good 3 years now and have decided it time to upgrade. Having used a friends 50D, I like the feel of the body and the functionality (where the buttons are etc). I would also like slightly better results from higher ISO's. A movie mode would be an added bonus. I really want to progress my photography, and try and get some work published but obviously higher standard gear is usually required (stock photos etc).

I am currently trying to decide between the 60D (or 50D) and the 7D. The 7D is currently the model I'm swaying towards, from the reviews I've read online.

The other decision is whether to get the 60D or 7D with a lens, in this case I'm looking at the 15-85mm. I currently use the Sigma 17-70 OS HSM lens which has been great, but I wonder whether the 15-85 Canon would be a decent upgrade and to sell the Siggy?

As you say, it has been covered loads, especially the 7D vs 60D aspect ;)

From what I can tell the 60D has been dumbed down a bit from the rest of the X0D series, plastic body etc, so the handling may not be as good as the 50D you tried.

My logic would be that if you liked the 50D, go for one of them.
 
The 7D has a great continuous shutter speed, so if you're doing photography of fast changing things, that might be what you're after. The 50D might be a bit hard to find at the moment. By all accounts, the 60D isn't in the same league as the 50D or 7D, especially the external build quality.
 
Yeah, I would go for the 7d in an instant. Great camera with movie mode too. Never held a 60d though, but would imagine the 7d to be a significant step up.

Thats rather a generalisation I think- and not even a very accurate one! In terms of build quality no doubt the 7D is better, and of course its got the FPS.

However its got identical image quality and ISO performance, and the articulated screen is really a lot more useful for video and for landscapes than the 7D's fixed do.

Go and try all the said cameras!

I like the functions on the 50D, and it does seem like a solid camera, but if I'm upgrading as a long term investment wouldn't the 7D be a better option with the better specs?

I have had a quick look, and the 50D is certainly not widely available. The build quality of the 7D is definitely swaying me more.

Although I know this is a good camera, the spec just doesn't sell it to me as a long term investment. I know good glass is vital, but I think a body which technology wise, and function wise, will keep me going for the foreseeable future would be more important.

The articulated screen is actually one of the good points about the 60D. BUT the 7D seems to get such good reviews and feedback.

I guess I will have to go and try them out - I'll see if my local stores have them to try!

If you can afford the 7D go for it!
 
600D, 60D and 7D all have the same sensor so will produce the same images with the same lens (assuming you can focus it correctly). The buying choice is whether you need microadjust, want the better autofocus system the 7D offers or the want for a mag alloy frame.

One thing I like is that 7D and 5D2 have virtually identical button placements, but that probably won't sway you too much :D
