Rare to see them perched as if room on the feeder they fly straight in and then hog it for a long time​

Try sunflower hearts - much cheaper than niger seed and doesn't make the mess under the feeder when it all germinates. If you look at my other Goldie shot you will see I mix it with a little "normal" wild bird food that keeps all the finches, blue and great tits, sparrows, starlings and even the robin happy. I tried Niger seed but had much more success with this mix. The gold and green finches stay for a good few minutes feeding, chaffinches not so long as I think they have a problem with the perches, starlings perform noisy acrobatics whist the tits grab and go and the robin makes a quick grab as it too finds the perches difficult.
