I had been looking for a cheap upgrade/side step from my nifty fifty and decided in leu of winning the lottery manual focus could be the way to go. So here we have a Canon 50mm f1.8 Vs Asahi Pentax Super Takumar 50mm f1.4. the pentax was £50 for reference, the rear element has a light scratch and the internals are a bit yellowed although I will fix this in time, for now I let AWB sort it out
Nifty Fifty Vs Super Tak at f1.8
At f4
And finally f16
I'm quite pleased with the pentax in comparison, if focuses nicely, something the 20D struggles with in low light even on the nifty fifty (its a bit hit and miss and without USM and only 80deg of focus its not easy to manually tweek). The Pentax with an auto focus confirm adapter allows you to sweep the focus and it 'blips' as it locks on so even if you cannot get a lock on your exact focus point you can estimate well from points in front and behind.
Any thoughts?
