Another lens query

Sorry guys and gals, I have a lens query.

My 400D came with the 18-55 EF-S lens and I have an old Canon 55-200 lens, which I use infrequently. I am looking for a lens that combines the too if poss.

I saw a Tamron one (forget the actual focal length) but someone I kow commented that non-Canon lenses (like Tamron and Sigma) work a lot slower. Is this true? Is it better to splash out on a Canon lens?

Well sigma do both 18-200 IS and non IS not that fast but the IS would make it more useful with slower shutter speeds.

No that's not true.

Some lenses work faster or slower than others, all manufacturers have examples of slow and fast ones.
