Another 'moral' query...

I was in New York last week, enjoying the sunset at Pier 17 when an event unfolded in front of us...

We didn't actually see the initial incident, but it quickly became apparent that a man was in the East River under the Brooklyn Bridge, apparently having attempted suicide (although that was just speculation from those around us, it's hard to think of another reason), our understanding is that he survived.

To my surprise, I started snapping away and although I only had 150mm available to me, was able to see fairly well what was going on and captured a lengthy sequence, a few of which are displayed as follows: http://www.chrisharrison.smugmug.com/gallery/7421545_xdiGV#478736938_yyaMU.

Is this 'ok', particularly as I've now 'shared' them? Had you asked me beforehand, I would have said that I would not have taken photos, and although my family was ok with the photos, they were also quite surprised that I took them (I'm just generally not that sort of person). If anything I think it was the interest in seeing a helicopter so low under the Brooklyn Bridge that kicked the photographer in me into action, I was quite selective in terms of the rescue shots I took, and made sure that the actual person involved was featured in very few photos (he is nowhere near identifiable in any of them)

Thoughts?

I can't see anything morally wrong with your pics, whilst you can make out that it is a man in the water, he's not really identifiable from the photographs.

If, on the other hand, the man could be easily recognised from the pics then it might be a different matter, but as things stand I don't see any issues with them.

As I'm in work I can't open the link to your pictures to have a look but from what you have described I don't think you have anything to feel bad about sharing them. You didn't go looking for the situation to happen, you were just in the right place at the right time to capture some journolistic photos. Hopefully the person in question survived and is recovering but to be blunt, it doesn't really make a difference to your photos as you had no control over what actually happened.

I look forward to seeing the pictures when I get home later.

just looks like a normal day to me  shame you didnt have any closer stuff as it would of made it more interesting photographically to me. If someones going to jump i want the pics guts n all but thats me:cuckoo:. I remember a picture of a naked burnt i think girl running away from something in a LIFE magazine years ago horrifying to see but memorable and thats what makes a good photograph.

Nice helicopter shots but thats it:shrug:
