Right I'm moving up from a crop sensor on a budget as ever, and have been considering the 5d Mk1 and the 1ds Mk2.

I've read numerous reviews of both, and they are both capable cameras.

However the 1ds Mk2 is ~twice the price of the other.

Multi point af doesn't bother me, I always focus of one point or manual focus.

All weather sealing would be nice, but I can if i have to work round it.

25% more pixels. Though I'm currently doing OK with less than both.

1ds Mk2 bulky and weighs more.

So should I just get the 5D ?

Reading your post it seems that you already favour the 5D. I suspect that the prices are going to be pretty stable for it right now, why not go that route and then decide if you miss the extra bits (though your post suggests that you won't)?

The 5DI is an excellent camera.

Well I guess I'm prepared to pay the extra, if someone can come with a really good reason that I might have missed.

However you are right 2 5d bodies for the price of 1ds2 is looking mighty tempting.

What about 5dmk2 ? 1dsmk2 are for around £1800-1900 pounds if Im not wrong.and if u can spend so much on body, dont need extra speed and more focusing points 5dmk2 would be better option.
But still 5d is excellent piece of kit and maybe worth to buy it along with good glass as lets say 135L :)

I've used a 5dMk2. Great camera. I'll most likely wait until the price falls before I get one though.

I've a 135L, lovely glass. Looking for an 85L next.

I have used a 5D classic, own a 5DmkII and would love a 1 series.

The 1DsII AF system should not be dismissed so quickly - the 5D (both classic and mkII versions) AF is really only any good with the centre AF point. The remaining 8 points are pretty useless in anything except perfect lighting conditions.
They are also placed in the standard diamond configuration which is located very tightley in the centre of the frame. This makes auto focusing on images in rules of thirds locations very difficult without focusing and then recomposing (which is not very good practise due to the changing of angles and thus focus planes).

The 1DsMkII has a very wide spread of AF points and a large number of them are Cross type. These are far more sensitive in low light and they are placed in locations that are actually useful.

Added to this you get a built in Grip for better ergonomics and battery life, the ability to save images to two memory cards at once, use cheaper SD memory cards as well as CF, still get Auto Focus when using f/5.6 lenses and a teleconverter (such as 100-400 for example) and weather sealing

These are all very compelling positives to the 1DsmkII. I would spend the extra personally.

I'd prefer 5D, purely because of the size. I wish there was a D700 equivalent. The only thing that concerns me (except lack of funds) is the state of either of the two. They were probably used since 2005 on a daily basis and are at the end of their lifecycle. If you could afford, it would makes sense to buy new and sell 2-3 years later for 50% price, instead of paying 50% after 3 years and finishing it off.

TBH the 5D plus lens is already a pretty large object. An extra inch of body will not make a huge amount of difference in the bag. The extra size of the grip does make taking portrait orientation shots much easier.

The 1series is also rated to 100,000 shutter actuations, so it is very easy t find a low shutter count body.

There is a 5d Mk1 with extras that has just been posted in the F/S section.

Fraggle101 is the seller might be worth a visit.

I have upgraded from 40D to 5D and very happy with it. It is well worth the money :)
