Another problem with my D700.

When I was out the other day I put my D700 down whilst still turned on, I've done it many times before and it's been fine. When I picked it up a little while later I noticed that the battery indicator had gone down from 60% to 20% just sat there.

I've been having a play and searching on the web and turns out my meter isn't turning off on its own. I've checked my settings (got the auto meter off set to 8s) and I've even reset the custom and shooting banks. I tried all my batteries (fully charged) and grip and still no joy. My D300 is working fine and I can't see anything really obviously different in the settings.

The only thing I can think of that I changed recently was the firmware to 1.03.

Any suggestions?

Ah, never thought of dirty contacts. Thanks, I'll give it a try.

I assume isopropyl alcohol and cotton buds would be ok as well?
 
I would think so.
 
I tried cleaning all the contacts with cotton buds and isopropyl but no joy. I've also re-downloaded and installed the latest firmware.

Is it possible to downgrade the firmware to try?

Had exactly the same problem a few months ago [ok, similar, batteries being chewed through, but had the CF light flashing when turned off], I thought I had fried a battery at first, then though it was a camera issue. Turned out there was a dead short on the grip. Have you tried it without the grip to see if same still happens?

Cheers Yv. I have tried it with the grip off as well as several different memory cards, still the same. I have to send it in for a broken aperture coupling anyway so I'll mention it at the same time.
