Hi all, and happy new year to everyone on TP.

I'm pondering getting a Sigma 120-400mm F4.5-5.6 APO DG OS HSM.

I currently have a Canon 70-200mm F4 L (non-IS) which is used mostly with a 1.4 extender attached. I also have the Canon 70-300mm 4-5.6 IS. Both respectable lenses and no issues with them. But they cover pretty much the same range and the 70-300 is spending most of the time sitting at home, which is a bit of waste really.

The option I'm looking at is to PX both to get the Sigma. I have read many threads on the forum and there are many good reports and the occasional not-so-good. Along side this there are some fantastic images achieved by the Sigma.

The extra length and IS of the Sigma appeals to me. I shoot quite a diverse range of subjects i.e. I don't rule out anything. Particular favourites are Motorsport (extra length would be useful), Birds (OS would be useful) and hope to get more into wildlife.

It would take a long time to save for a 100-400 L, much longer than it would for my wife to buy a frying pan to hit me with after thinking of spending that much on a lens! So that rules that out.

I find that most of my shots I have to crop, some quite a lot. My thinking is that hopefully the (up to) 400 would reduce the need for cropping and possibly improve the overall image quality in the end.

Hope that makes sense.

Thoughts?

Cheers.

I can't comment much on the Sigma lens (Apart from the fact it rated very highly on the list of lenses most needing repair from a US rental company)

But the used value of your two lenses if sold privately is approx £675 and you can pick up a 100-400L for about £800 if you shop around. Hell, you can make up some of the difference selling the 1.4x (Which will likely disable AF on either of your 400mm choices)

I think you'd miss the 70-200, the 120-400 can be too long when your shooting on some tracks/positions

Valid point. I had this problem shooitng at mallory park with my 120-300mm

I have used the 120-400 for some time now without any problems and it has produced good results for me.

Yeah, perhaps your right. I'll stick with what I've got for now. I would probably regret getting shot of the L as soon as I did it.

Cheers for now

Sell the 70-300, and see if you really miss it.

If so, save up & buy the 120-400 for the new motorsport season
