Hi im going to finland on sunday and was wondering if anyone here has experiances of shooting in temps close to -20 because i am worried that my kit will just freeze. I use a 450d will the lowpro 300 be ok to keep it warm?

Battery life will take a hammering and ther is a risk of condensation when entering a warm/humid area with cold kit. So long as you keep it dry, it should still work, even if very cold.

Wrap lenses/camera in a plastic bag before entering a building as this limits the amount of condensation that forms before things warm up.

Keep a spare battery in an inside pocket & swap it at regular intervals to keep the battery happy.

Being as this sounds like a trip of a lifetime, shoot in RAW. That way, you will be able so adjust the white balance and tweek exposures for any badly exposed shots which would otherwise be poor snaps instead of good pics. Extra storage space for larger raw files too.

Sorry if its sucking eggs and you alreary shoot raw.

Thanks for the replys i will try the plastic bag trick when entering the cabin. and to singlespeed i do shoot in raw and it is a great trip third year in a row. im on the hunt for a 300 foot frozen waterfall whilst im there i saw 3 years ago will get some cracking shots there.

Took 250 photos with my 450D in -6 or so temperature and battery still showing as full. Thats despite camera hung round my neck so exposed to the cold.

Main danger i can see is condensation bringing it back indoors etc.

Its not that bad at the moment :) Only -10ish - where are you headed?

Transfer back to the warm needs attention, and the bag trick works ok.You will also see the LCD will slow/stop working as well.

I keep spare battery in my pocket to keep them warmer as well.

Main thing is gloves that keep your fingers warm, but allow camera operation.

Im going to ruka right at the top of finland high in the mountains. got 2 spare batterys to keep warm incase there needed. my only issue after all this is if i take my 450d onto the slopes as theres 16 of us and i want some good pictures.

My brother lives in New York and he took some pix with hid 5D in -16 degrees and his camera was fine. I think it depends on how much moisture there is in the air to what damage could occur.

Thanks for the help everyone i can breath easy now and hopefully get some good shots to post here when i get back.
