Another tripod thread

Okay I've read about tripods, thought I understood things, looked at some, and am now confused again.

Here's what I have already: Manfrotto MKC3-H01

At the time, I needed a tripod urgently, it was a manfrotto and it suited video, which was important as I wanted to record an event using my Canon G12. I've now moved on to the the Canon 70D and find the tripod a bit inadequate.


Love it because:
  • It's light and compact
  • It feels fairly sturdy
  • It has a grip-style head which makes it easy to manouvre
  • It has a locking/thumbwheel on the grip so very easy to lock into position
  • I love the ball head - easy to manipulate
Hate it because:
  • The ballhead can feel loose and doesn't support the weight adequately
  • Despite it having a "video position", it doesn't have a pan-only mode.
  • I'm worried about the tripod being topheavy - I would want the ability to hang a weight.

So I'm after either a new tripod set up, or maybe just a new tripod head. Ideally I want something with adjustable ballhead resistance, a pan-only mode, and a comfortable grip-handle.
 
Okay I'm struggling to get what I'm after. It seems I can have a ballhead with adjustable friction and panlock but no handle, or I can have for a video tripod which has reduced range of movement (either 2-way, or 3-way with lots of handles and bulk).

Am I better off buying both a photo head and a video head? Is there a suitable tripod base or system that I could buy into with interchangable heads?
