Another 'which camera' thread!

OK, don't flame me - I'm only the messenger :)

My sister is looking for a new camera. She had 'almost' made here mind up on a Canon G12, but has a final list to choose from!

Canon G12
Canon SX40
Panasonic FZ150
Nikon P7100
Nikon D3100 (with 18-55 lens)

I've tried to do some research for her and have to say that all these cameras have good attributes albeit that they are quite different. At the end of the day image quality is prime (to me anyway). Setting aside the different sizes and convenience, which of these cameras would you experts choose?

Oh yes, she's done all that - months of research! :)

Perhaps I should have mentioned that she doesn't want to end up having to buy more lenses, so whilst the D3100 is on her list it would be with the kit 18-55 lens.

The question would be better if it was between G12 or P7100 and between SX40 or FZ150.

The big advantages of the first two are obviously size and portability (being able to stick it in a pocket/handbag cannot be underestimated) but less zoom reach. In the real world and unless you are specialising in wildlife/sport shots etc this is less of an issue than you think.
Given the above I would go with G12 first every time then the P7100 simply because Nikon haven't quite got the compact camera format right yet and Canons pedigree in this area is unrivaled IMO.

Of the other two ? well I dont really know enough to say because I have never used a Bridge Camera, on paper there isn't much between them but I would have to say the FZ150 simply because it shoots in RAW and that (to me anyway) is a sale breaker.

Between the G12 and the FZ150 ? That's really down to the user to decide on what is more practical re. portability. Personally I would take the G12 over a Bridge Camera any day.

IQ on all four is pretty good and the FZ150 has a Leica lens. The images look superb. My Dad has one and although he really like it, the images look a little over processed to me.

I would go for the P7100 over the G12 because it has a longer zoom and none of those silly AV and TV markings (Just me, whats wrong with A for Aperture and S for speed) And it has a bigger sensor than the bridge cameras, so IQ will be better.

Nikon P7100 is my choice.

I personally also prefer the G12 for a compact and the FZ150 as a bridge camera (both from handling them and from reading online reviews, so thanks for that :)

She wants an all round camera suitable for almost anything! She wants to make photography a hobby too, but as mentioned before doesn't want to have to lash out for extra lenses in the future.
