Yes
Thanks for looking :)

Budget - Around £450 (Will buy from eBay if cheaper).
Experience - NONE with a DSLR, only ever used digi cams.
Reason - Want to take it on my Honeymoon in 3 weeks + long term use in the future.

These are the 3 I'm looking at on eBay.

Canon 1000D
£429 - 8GB SD / 3 x Lens / Digi Flash / Bag

Canon 450D
£410 - 8GB SD / 18-55mm Lens

Nikon D3000
£412 - 8GB / 3 x Lens / Digi Flash / bag

Will the above do everything my Digi cam will do (Casio EX-Z850) and more?

Which one should I go for? Are there any I've missed out?

Many thanks, CJ.

well for a start the 1000d doesn't come with 3 lenses, its coming with some adapters to make the kit lens appear to have wide angle or telephoto capabilities.

I'd go for the 450d, My sister just got the d3000 nikon and after owning a 450d for a year and then trying out the d3000 i didn't think it was as good as the 450d, it felt almost like a toy. The video mode on it wasn't great, if you wanted a decent video mode on an SLR go for the 500d or 550d.

Looking at the 3 lens delux kits I would say the majority of the extras are crap basically so treat them as a single lens kit. I'm a Nikon man so I can't really comment on the Canon stuff. If you can pop into a camera shop and get a feel of the bodies, they are all going to do the same job really at entry level so it can come down to user friendliness. Don't forget the classifieds on here, you can get some great deals on used equipment.

I have some items in there ;)

Wow, thanks for the speedy replies.

I was looking at a DSLR about 6months ago, and was a click away from buying the 450D, but decided to hold off a little longer.

My brother inlaw has a 400D, which I've had a play with and enjoyed.

Is the D30 overall a better camera to the 450D? If so, how?

How does the 350D (Petersmart is selling) compare to the 450D?

It won't be used much, but I don't want to buy a lower spec, and want to upgrade soon.

Thanks for the link Gaz.

But for my entry into DSLR, the 450D will do me?

Main useage will be holiday snaps and car pictures.

I can see the XXD take CF rather than the XXXD use SD. Is there a huge difference?

The 450D has a 12Mp sensor, a larger LCD on the back and Live View.

How soon you upgrade from a camera depends on you but I had the 350D for about 5 years before I felt I had outgrown it, and I used to be a pro photog.

I now have a 450D but that is only a stop gap before I upgrade to a 5D MkII (funds permitting).

But good luck with whatever camera you finally get.

However I would say that you will ptobably be better buying on here from people who look after their gear than on ebay.

In the past year or so I have saved over £1000.00 by buying s/h n here and have been very pleased with all my purchases.

Just buy from someone with a good Itrader rating.

Be careful as well not to get to hung up on mega pixels.

Unless you are going to do massive prints 8+ will be more than enough.

More MP doesn't mean better images :-)

Ok, are there any cameras you'd recommend in the same price range? Or the ones I've listed best to stick with?

Sony (A100/A500)
Samsung (GX10)

Any others?

All brands take good pictures you make them great.
Go try all the makes in a shop then you will know which you feel comfortable with. After all it is you that will be holding it not us:)

I am selling a 400D here;

It's been great as a first dslr... I didn't feel the need to upgrade till 3 years on!
Getting a good collection of lens' wins over the actual camera body (for me)

The best thing you can do is get down to a shop and have a good feel for a body that you feel comfortable with.
Your first camera should be a learning curve so I wouldn't worry about getting the right one first time round.

Will the 450D be sufficient to do long exposures? Ie of waterfalls or nightlife (car lights?)

Of course, with a remote you can use bulb mode to keep the shutter open for an arbitrary amount of time.

Thanks, and without a remote?

Are there any options on the camera that will allow this (e.g. my digicam I set it on a tripod hit 10second delay, and a xxx exposure)

As far as I know all Canon cameras have a delay - just set the tripod, set the delay and the camera will take the pic.

If you set the aperture via AV the the camera will set the time depending on exposure needed.

Or you can set the time via TV and the aperture will set itself.

The maximum time that can be set is 30 secs on the 450D.

As far as I know it's the same on the 350D.

BTW if you're into HDR you can also set Automatic Exposure Bracketing (AEB) and then set continuous shooting then delay and the camera will then take 3 seperate exposures at -2, 0 and +2 EV for HDR shots from a tripod.

450D if i had to choose and i may be doing that soon! This really is a cracking camera!

I've just watched the Gadget Show review on their website, where it is put up against the Nikon D3000.

Overall, the Canon 450D seems to do what I want.

How will the standard lens (18-55) do for touristy shots, and possibly handing it to my brother for my wedding in a few weeks?

personally, I think for a kit lens the 18-55 (IS) works very well.
it's what I use for my 'touristy' type shots if I'm not using a P&S camera :)

Got any shots from this camera + lens you'd care to share? :D

lol, most of my pics I used a 70-300, and now I have a 100-400 instead... but these were taken with the kit lens:

my ametuerish site :D is here: http://jambophoto.co.uk/

unless on bulb mode, then you can do as long as you want.
I've had it running for 20 mins in the past :) (trying to get star trails)

Maybe but as I said the maximum time that can be set on TV is 30 sec.

to be honest i have been thinking about changing for a while so i went for the canon mainly because there is a much better lens choice they are easier to get and theres more people using canon cameras i found it difficult when i needed help with something and nobody could help as they didnt own a sony which is very frustrating when your not sure what your doing

The 450D is a very capable camera. The kit 18-55 IS lens is pretty good. Remember that for indoor low light shots (Church Wedding) you'll need faster glass. This means a lens that will open wider, good idea to add a 'nifty fifty'.. It's the 50mm 1.8. Can be purchased new for as little as £95. This lens is a 'no brainer'. You'll love it. Everyone should have it in the bag.

Thank you. Luckily our wedding is in Cyprus, overlooking the beach, so light shouldn't be an issue on the day.

I had a good look at the 450D yesterday evening, and believe that's the one I'll get. Now, which one to buy.

Is it worth buying new?

eBay £450 - Camera + Lens + 8GB

eBay £500 - Camera + Lens + loads of extras

Comet £450 - Camera + Lens - Store Collection only, and NONE in York :(

Amazon also have the Camera + Lens for £455

Camera, Lens and Memory card makes a kit. Only buy the listing with 'loads of extras' if they're the ones you'd buy anyway. Most importantly get a little used specimen.

Thank you, I'm interested.

Can you honestly tell me how the 450D compares to the 500D?

Also, the lens, is that the exact same I'd get with the 459D new?

The lens is exactly the same.

The 500D is a better camera than the 450D (I had the 450D before the 500D).

In a nutshell, amongst others, it increases the resolution from 12.2 to 15.1mp, it adds higher ISOs, a much higher resolution screen, and (very importantly) video recording (you will appreciate this for the wedding :))

A comparison here:
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/com...&cameras=canon_eos450d,canon_eos500d&show=all

BTW I just came back from Cyprus and I posted many photos in the forum :)

Found the whole list of changes from the 450D:

* Higher resolution sensor (15.1 vs 12.2 effective megapixels)
* Extended ISO range up to ISO 12800
* HD video capability
* New 3.0 inch 920K pixels screen
* Adjustable noise reduction and highlight tone priority
* Face Detection in Live View
* Peripheral Illumination Correction
* HDMI output
* Larger buffer in continuous shooting
* Digic 4 style menu design

Can you just confirm for me, it's in as new condition, and complete as if I bought from s high street? Uk model? Anything else I should know?

What payment methods, and how soon can you post?

Edit -I'll move to your topic
