I'm new to talk photo and would welcome any comments or advice !
I have a Canon 5D, the first one, but its only ever had basic kit lenses, namely usm28-90 and 70-300. The long telephoto is particularly soft in its results. I plan to get a 24-105 L series for the wider angle and to use as the default lens but then cannot afford the 70-300 L series. Any advice please?

The OP is asking if he should buy the 24-105 and keep his existing 70-300, or should he keep his 28-90(?) and get the L version 70-300.

Unless i`m very much mistaken, if so, i`ll STFU.

Nope, they're definitely getting the 24-105, but can't run to the L telezoom. We might presume they're asking for alternatives to the L zoom, but it's definitely not explicit.
 
my general advice would be to buy the 24-105 second hand , in order to save money which can then be put towards the desired longer zoom. Also not to expect L glass to be the panacea , ive not noticed my non L 300 being particularly soft so its possible your long lens shots are soft due to wobble rather than poor glass
 
you could look at tamron and sigma stuff too, seen a review where they found the 24-70 tamron to have enough sharpess to be better than the 105 at the long end :o, so you get better pic by cropping :o
