Any disadvantage of using step-up rings?

Hi,

I'm current building my photography toolkit and am focusing on screw-in filters. I currently have two Nikon lenses, both with a 55mm thread. However, I am planning to buy a wide-angle zoom (prob. Sigma 10-20mm) which has a 77mm thread. I was thinking about using step-up rings so that I just have to buy 77mm filters and they can still be used with the 55mm lenses.

Would there be any disadvantage to taking this approach?

TIA,

Iain :)

Only that you may need to also buy a 77mm lens hood.

Not sure you can go from 55mm - 77mm in one step so it may cost you more than you think.

I found a step-up set from 49-52-55-58-62-67-72-77-82 mm set on eBay for £12. Didn't think about the lens hood...very good point.

Good spot - it was a mistake....they are actually 52mm Nikon lenses (18-55, 55-200) :) Sorry about that.

Thanks for the tip. Is the vignetting problem just when using a big step-up (eg, 52-77) or even with small steps?

52-62 and 62-77

Get a centre-pinch 77mm lens cap, too.
