Ok I am probably asking for a bit of verbal abuse but...

Is there any one else on here that has a Nikon J1or V1 or even any other mirrorless camera?

I got I J1 for christmas and it has opened a whole new door to photography I didn't even know about. When I first got it I didn't think it was that great but since then I have started shooting in manual or aperture mode and capturing the images in raw (NEF), and am well impressed.

I am thinking should up grade to the V1 for the electronic view finder and better flash (i.e. with swivel for bounce flash. I currently use a little plastic mirror to bounce my pop up flash but could do with a bit more power.)

What are your views on this camera system.

Why would you get abuse?

Lots of us have mirror less cameras. I have a Panasonic GF1 and it's fantastic. When I don't want to carry my DSLR around, I can just slip it in my pocket with the 20mm f1.7.
Haven't used the Nikon ones, but have no reason to doubt they are also very good.

Thanks Tom, good to hear you also use a mirrorless as an alternative.

The majority of folk on here seem to be possessing DSLR Cameras, which have their advantages but would still like to see how the J1 stacks up in comparison.

I have seen quite a few negative coments on other random photography forums searchable through google about the Nikon J1, which kinda gave me a bad vibe but as a J1 user I think it's fantastic even though it does have some fall backs.

Welcome,

I don't know how strong your loyalty to Nikon is but if you are thinking of starting over with morror-less then you could do worse than consider micro 4/3.

Panasonic and Olympus are the names to look for, I'm very happy with the results I'm getting.

I have no experience of the Nikon mirror-less system but have no doubt they give excelent results.

I do not have shares in either Pany or Oly. :D

...depending on what you need from your photography, it may or may not be the best camera out there.

Watch the cobwebs on that thread, though, and if you type loud enough there's an echo.... On the plus side, if you do become a thread contributor, we can both laugh at Leica M shooters for buying such a common camera.... real exclusivity comes with the V1 around here....

great pics in there, Alan! The V1/J1 are more camera than most will ever need, and I predict that they'll gain momentum as people discover just how versatile they are. For once, sensor size isn't everything... I realised I value speed over performance.

I'm holding out for a 'pro' version of the V1, after using my Ricoh GRDIII for a few weeks a level of customisation/control in a Nikon equivalent would be great. The AF is very impressive too. I actually quite like the way small sensors make things look, you can use geometry a lot more effectively with the huge DOF the sensors give you.

Hey dan I was have a look at some of your photos on 500px and I must say pretty impressive. I some times wonder if most folk buy a dslr to compensate for their own ability or are they just suckered into the persona that more mega pixels must be better. Any non professional dslr owners that I have happened to talk to face to face seem to know very little about photography and little interest in wanting to learn more hmmm... but don't get me wrong I am not dissing dslr owners as there are countless folk out there that put them to very good use, or who are learning to do so.

Hey Simon as an owner of both how would you rate the V1 over the J1? Apart from the faster flash sync speeds is there any other advantage of the mechanical shutter?
