Any ideas as camera has no IS

No
Apart from using a mono/tripod, i am presuming having the steadiest hand known to man is the only way to take photos if your camera has no IS.

Went out earlier and had some really bad photos. when the shutter speed is at 1/200 or 1/100 not too bad, but any lower and blurred city.

Did you try bumping up your ISO to give you a faster shutter speed?

Having just checked the data, it was at ISO 1600 anyway (must have had it on auto), so don't know what to do.

Thinking at the moment that this will always be an issue and just another tick in the box to upgrade

Can you give more detail about the shots your were taking, e.g weather conditions, lens used, aperture setting etc etc

Olympus 40-150mm 1:4-5.6
F18
1/20
Clear sky, still light.

Looks like your aperture is set too high.
At f18 as well as a slow shutter speed you will be inducing diffraction.
I reckon if you try shoot around about f8 things would improve.

Given that ISO, shutter speed and aperture I guess this was a clear evening shot and not in the middle of the day when its bright and clear.

F18 waaaay to high. On your setup you shouldnt really go over f11...

Are you sure you were at iso 1600? Even at f18 you should be getting a faster shutter speed in daylight, more in the thousands of a second.

Will have to drop down to F8-11 tomorrow and have another play.

ISO is auto, i may go full manual so i can control everything and have a better idea.

The settings are what is says in the info bit when i get info for the photo, may not be 100% correct.

Hi

Sunny f16 Rule suggests on a typical sunny day an Aperture value of f16 should allow a shutter value of 1/100 at ISO 100.

So you should in theory have 4 stops of ISO in hand at ISO1600, giving you a shutter speed of 1/1600 (less the 1/3rd stop as you were at f18).

What was your metering mode? Where you taking a pic/metering off something very dark?

No metering was off a light area, as was trying to take a few snaps of a pigeon that was feeding on the grass.

May just be a dodgy couple of shots as all others today have been fine.

Have been out today, went on full Manual.

F11, ISO 400 and played around with shutter speed.

Alot better than yesterday, must have had a funny half hour.

Willput a pic or two up later for you all to slate i mean critique me.

I don't think it will be critqued as such on this thread as its maybe more a technical point than say an artistic point. I think most folk will be interested in the scene and the EXIF to see if there is an obvious issue somewhere.

I could be wrong of course

The old rule to avoid camera shake is to shoot at (or faster then) the reciprocal of the focal length - so if you're shooting at 150mm you should try to keep the shutter speed above 1/150s.

I presume you don't have a mono or tripod, in which case the old string dodge may help. Tie a piece of string around the barrel of the lens, place the other end under your foot and tension against it, you will find that helps steady things up.

Yes I do have a tripod, don't always take out, especially when walking the dog, but looking at a mono just for when I have to slow the shutter speed down.

bump your ISO up and read your manual properly so you know how your camera works

Why are you shooting at f11 with iso 400????? don't understand....
get down to F5.6 or 6.8 to get some light in and get higher shutter speed

Because about 3 weeks ago i turned off my auto and started using the manual settings on my phone, still at the bottom of a very steep learning curve, and as they say, you learn by your mistakes :help:
