I need something making for Wheel's camera setup:

The camera will sit on top of a Manfrotto vertical tube from a 055 tripod which will sit in the top section of an 055 tripod. Now what I am going to need will be an aluminium plate maybe 6mm thick and about 11cm by 16cm with the corners rounded. This will need a hole cut in it 35mm in diameter (in the centre) and then mounting holes (which I can add later).

Then I need to fabricate three connecting pieces to mounting points on the chair. I have sorted the location of these out and I am just thinking about what to make them out of (60cm x 2 and 30cm x 1).

Ho hum.....

I want the platform to be VERY stable !!

I am at a wedding tomorrow so nothing will be actually done till I am off on Monday. If anyone has any ideas or access to a piece of aluminium that size or BRILLIANTLY if someone can make this (we can pay if necessary as there is a contingency fund still)

So can anyone make this for us (if I make it it will not be as nice :()

if you have some drawings to show the brackets and the rest Darren, i can ask around

I might be able to do that as well!

Oh, now that would be VERY handy.

Just so you have an idea, the piece needs the corners rounding off just so it is safe.

There needs to be one 35mm hole in it in the middle of the plate. There will be 7 more holes but these are just small round holes that can be drilled easily.

I've just described it below, it is quite simple but I think our combined idea of using the top of the tripod is PERFECT for it !

Once we have the plate I then need to connect the plate to the brackets going onto the axles.

This is likely to be easier, I think, and I was going to use some bar and weld it to brackets so I could do with locating some 8mm mild steel bar too. (about 2 metres of it!!). The brackets at the aluminium plate end would just need to be 2cm by 2cm L section either pot rivetted to the aluminium plate or screwed to it

They do Im not safe near sharp edges

You could try Joe at RedSnapper.

His tripods are imported but he's got a machine shop too I think. He's also a well helpful guy and good friend of TP :)

This is the section of the tripod top plate that is going on the plate:

The post from the 055 tripod will then slide through the centre of this mount (which will hold it in place etc) and through the 35mm hole.

The plate will then be attached to the chair using (probably but this is not finalised) mild steel rod or threaded bar. I like the threaded bar approach with the bar covered in plastic tubing.

The bar attaches to the chair using PA lighting brackets.

The Manfrotto clamps and arms are used for the screen and flash.

NOTE: I have some stuff lying around from when I used to rebuild motorcycles and I have a decent MIG welder but any help with threaded bar, L section steel, mild steel bar etc would be appreciated. There is money left to pay for stuff if necessary but if people have access to it cheaply or free that it better.

Just so happens i work for an Aerospace company with a full toolmaking / machine shop..

We have plenty of scrap bits of metal around..

Give me sketches of exactly what you want and i will see what i can do...

Mark

UPDATES 12pm
Plenty of Ali and Steel.
Free CNC machine to make the plates etc...

If you could PM details/sketches, i could make a start Monday...

I don't have any way of drawing it up but it is basically just a rectangle 11x16 cm in 6-8mm aluminium with the corners rounded off and a 35mm round hole directly in the centre. If possible 2 would be really good!

Darren.. you need Google SketchUp (it's free!)..

Is this what you mean?

Should be no problem making 2 of those...

What about the angle bracket ???

Mark

That would be good too :)

basically i need L brackets maybe 8 cm long attached to the 11cm end or alternatively (and probably tidier) the length extended by a couple of cm and bent by 90 degrees. I am sat at a wedding at the moment so can't manage sketchup on the iPhone.

Thanks everyone!

Does that mean my new contraption is part Euro fighter???:D

Cant thank you all enough for still carrying on helping.

Yep whatever you do, do not flick the lever up that sits of top of the "joystick controller" and press the button under it. OK it's not there yet, but will be by the time your chair is finished...:lol::lol::lol:

The Eurofighter is mostly Titanium, they wont let me have that...:lol:

Probably leftovers from Airbus commercial planes.....

Will sketch something up to confirm design...

I know I am a fatty but please let me live the dream of euro fighter. instead of the airbus :-)

Darren,

Havent got a machine powerful enough to bend 6mm thick plate but can make this....

Is this what you are after ???

If you need bolts, metal etc there is a supplier called CROMWELL near you in Blackburn, which should be useful when fitting it together....

The plates have been made and will be delivered ASAP....

This is brilliant and I have replied to the PM. I always seem to want that little bit more though and have asked for another hole

If these get here for tomorrow I might even be able to do a dry fit tomorrow using my D200+head+lens in place of wheels' items.

Oh and Stuart from Digital Depot says the rest of the bits are there too so hoping for next week (but not weekend anymore).

May be too late but have you looked at the Manfrotto 183 table top as a starting point? Also QED may be able to offer some help or even a purpose bulit option:-
http://www.qedonline.co.uk/catalog/index.php?cPath=82

Hope this helps

I hadn't seen that but the bracket Mark has made is perfect. I had not seen QED before but their price for the arm and clamp at £117 seems rather good. After messing with this stuff I am looking to use a similar setup in my studio for the arm so will be buying one myself. This will also come in handy for dry fitting any setups on my future victims before making sure that I buy the right parts.

Thanks :)
