as some of you may know I have been considering one of these
ideally I wanted the OS version but these are non existent s/h and a bit dear new
The non os is also quite rare s/h and fetches 420 - 500 s/h +postage
when ware house express have this discontinued model for 460 delivered free
I am concerned the non os would need to be tripod mounted so in effect of no real practical use
any body have this lens and can give some real life experience based advice
I don't want to buy one if it is no good
 
Back in the past nobody had IS lenses and they coped, I think you are worrying without cause. Just need to use an adequate shutter speed and practice good technique, a monopod is less cumbersome and helpful. Obviously budget is the real issue so you have to work with what is affordable, the cheapest IS is the Sigma 150-500, but that is more than £460. They are a highly regarded lens so if you find you can't manage with it you should have no problem selling it on.
 
There's a 150/500 OS in the FS forum at the moment.

Personally, there's no way I would go without OS on a lens that I use mainly at 500mm in typical UK light conditions.

These lenses need stopping down, for sharpness, using OS will allow you to cope with the slow shutter speed that results, often below 100th sec!
 
i do have an old ef 75-300 usm from my old 35mm canon
I remember that looking very wobbly through v/f but the images were fine
I've tried it on my crop through the v/f it looks as I have parkinsons lol but the images are fine

I can't access the FS room yet due to the 60 day rule
 
My son has a non OS Bigma and it lives on his camera (Cannon 50d) He has no problems with non OS He just makes sure he has a high enough shutter speed (640+ at 500 end) to be able to hand hold and get sharp shots. He has a monopod but rarely uses it. Its a great lens heavy so get a good shoulder strap for carrying it around on.
 
I have a 50-500mm non OS version.
I spent a whole day with it at a wildlife park just a few days ago in mixed weather conditions.

Had it stopped down to f8 and kept the shutter speed up by bumping the ISO as far as 3200 when needed.
All my shots were handheld and my hit rate at the 500mm end is good

It's a heavy piece of kit when strapped to a 50D but once you get used to it and watch your shutter speeds then the non OS version is really good.

I used one for several years shooting equine events, fantastic, sharp images and to say that you cannot hand hold at 500mm in the uk is total tosh, any speed from 640 upwards is sharp and that was with the none is version.

It is a superb cheap lens that is hard to better for the money

cheers for the input guys just got to find one at a sensible price in minty mint condition
looks like the non os new ones on warehouse express at 460 are no longer listed bummer
they are showing a sigma fit one for 480
I need a canon fit
