Anybody recommend a decent microphone for a 5D MKII?

I'm starting to do a bit of video on my 5D MKII and i know that the sound can be improved with an additional microphone. I preferably want one that will power from the camera rather than need separate power if thats possible.
Any advice gratefully received
 
All mics will need power, either from a battery or from the camera they are attached to. As the 5DII doesn't supply power via the mic jack then you will have to use a mic that has its own power supply like a Rode Video mic, Rode Stereo mic, Sennheiser mke 400 etc...

If you want to use a higher grade of mic like a Rode NTG1 or similar then you will need a power source as these only run from phantom power. You can get an adapter made by Beachtec that will allow you to adjust audio levels and supply phantom power to the mic but they are expensive, especially if you buy the one made especially for the 5DII.

Okay CSB, thats helpful thanks. I'm pretty sure that I want the Sennheiser MKE 400 but not too sure who does them. None of the usual camera shops who I normally deal with sell them so any ideas who best to pick one up from? I do appreciate your help
 
I heartily recommend Keene Electronics in Derby, their customer service is outstanding. I've heard good things about the MKE400, but I went for the Rode Video mic as it gets very good reviews and is almost half the price of the MKE400. Make sure you get a wind shield too.

Have a look at this cheeper than keen infact £104 at keen but they do include a 50pence winshield - see CPC for foam windshields

Although Keen are good they are not the best price in many instances! plus I am not sure the quality of the sound you will get from a DSLR will be improved much by spending £££ on mics?

All sorted now. Just ordered it from Keene with the wind shield. Thanks for all the advice. ;)
