Anybody use a Radeon 5770 in a MacPro?

Yes
I have an old school MacPro. It's the Intel Xeon which was current from 2006 - 2008 (not the Nehalem one). 667 MHz Memory.

It currently has a Radeon x1900 512 MB running dual 20" monitors.

PS CS5 isn't as fast as it used to be chucking around b-i-i-i-i-g files. With no real proof I suspect the graphics card (CS5 uses GPU - I jumped straight from CS3 that didn't).

So.....anybody put a 5770 in one of these machines? Apparently it's the only upgrade possible BUT it isn't approved by Apple for this machine so if it doesn't work I won't get a refund :(

the HD57x0, HD58x0 and HD59x0 can all be made to work with OS X. I am using a HD5750 PCIe, which is not supported by Apple. To get it to work, I had to modify the graphics Kexts (drivers basically) and inject the graphics cards Device ID. Unfortunately, this only works in 32bit mode, and current methods to get it working in 64bit are pretty unstable.

Anyway, I doubt its graphics card related. The X1900 series is plenty powerful for photoshop.

Ooo yeah - stepping down to 32 bit would probably do more harm than the new card :(

I think I am right in saying that the new generation Mac Pro's use the HD5770? In theory, as long as the card you buy has the same Device ID as the ones Apple use, you should be fine in 64bit mode.
