Anybody used a Tokina AT-X 16-28mm f/2.8 Pro FX Lens

Does anyone have experience of a Tokina AT-X 16-28mm f/2.8 Pro FX Lens for Nikon?

I can't really justify the cost of the Nikon 14-24m, which I suspect is the better lens, but equally would not want to spend c.£700 on a load of rubbish!

Also are Tokina lenses generally well built?

I have the Nikon 24-70 but need something wider for both interiors and landscapes. I know I would not be able to use filters with an ultra wide and I have considered the 16-35m F4 nikon but reviews say that IQ at the wide end isn't so good.

I would really like to hear from anyone who has first hand experience at using this lens, or any that I have mentioned.

Well that is rubbish, its as good and better wide open than any lens ive owned, ive owned 3 16-35mm's and all have been excellent wide open
 
The Tokina is a very nice lens a friend of mine swears by his. All third party glass has its downside though build quality, a.f issues etc. Personally I would go with the Nikon 16-35.

I have had Tokina lenses in the past and they are all built like tanks.

I previously owned the T0kina 11-16 pro & that was built like a tank (as f2.8 says)

I now have the Nikon 16-35 F4 & not had any issues re IQ tbh

I purchased a copy of this very lens used from here on TP on the basis that I do little landscape so did not want to pony up for the 14-24.

FWIW, I have been utterly delighted with it.

It is a VERY well-built lens, gives super-sharp images at all apertures and has some but not too much distortion even at the wide end on a D800e. I am sure this sort of thing can be corrected in PP anyway but I tend not to bother.

If you can find one used definitely worth a punt.

New they are not cheap but a bargain compared with the 14-24 of course.
 
I got a Nikon 16-35 f4 last week and it is excellent. :)

Don't have experience with that lens but I also have the Tokina 11-16, I think it's good very solid.

I own the Tokina lens. Build quality is excellent and af is fast. As far as I have been able to work out there is no filter system available (there is for the nikon 14-24). IQ is very good - I can always post a couple of example shots if you want
 
I had tested it so I would very happily use it at f/5.6. I don't own one because of the lack of filters. For landscapes you may want to use filters, unless you don't even need 10 stop, or grads (doubt it). It is still great for interiors, astro and reportage, but not the sort of landscapes on my website.

That would leave you with 16-35 and Zeiss 21mm.
