CHDK is a pseudo-firmware that takes your run of the mill point & shoot and gives it the functions you'd find on cameras that are far more expensive.

I installed it yesterday on my Ixus 860IS, using the #2 method to make my SD card bootable (don't forget to format the card as FAT16 first). One thing to remember is to keep your card on lock all the time, the camera won't mind and write files to it all the same, strange but true.

I tried RAW, that works very well. I found that Raw Therapee does a very good conversion (in fact, it looks like pretty good raw converter in many more ways, give it a try) to 16 bit PNG, which you can then open in PS or Gimp.
Live histogram works well as well, as does the zebra display (highlighting over/under exposure).
Same for scripting. I tried one script, interval video. The possibility of having parameters which you can set in advance using the alt-menu is pretty nice. There's a lot to be discovered here.

And yes, there are the obligatory games and the text reader, which could prove useful for reading the CHDK manual.

All in all definitely worth trying and using.

I know this is an old tread but.
CHDK rocks, I've got some really good results with it.

oooh! thanks for digging this up, I just bought an A560 :)

And I still shake my head in despair that one has to do this just to get a battery level indicator.

Don't you just love how canon makes an effort to include as many features as they can on their cameras!

Think I might have a play there is a download for my old Ixus 40!

Will it work with my Ixus 75??

Yes. Slightly more comprehensive list of support models here. You need to check your firmware version first. How to do this is in the FAQ.
