Just picked one of these up to scan negatives and, in a word, it's rubbish. Unless I am doing something wrong the quality of the scans is awful and very blocky/bitmappy.

Any ideas or should I look elsewhere?
 
To add, I am getting worse quality from the negatives than I am from scanning a photo that was printed from the same negative!
 
Mine is ok.

What software are you using? Sounds like a driver issue of some kind as my Epson did some weird looking scans until I got some updated driver which you shouldn't need but somehow you do.

I'm using vuescan. Which software are you using?
 
Have you set it to an appropriate resolution for the size of negative you are trying to scan.
 
I must admit I'm not that impressed with mine. Most negs seem a bit fuzzy but it's probably unfair to compare it to a dedicated film scanner. Scans of prints of negs do seem to look better than scans from negs for some reason.
 
No matter what the resolution, they look rubbish. Maybe dedicated film scanner is the only option; any recommendations?
 
No scan should look like bitmap - can you post an example? I saw a thread of a very similar nature to this one on a different forum a few months back, and I think there was actually a defect with their scanner, or they were using ICE when it was inappropriate.
 
Here you go, different photos I know but the top one is a scan from the negative taken in 1996, the one at the bottom is a scan from a photo taken in 1985.

I'm viewing this on a phone so bear that in mind - but these 35mm frames look like they were taken on a compact camera?

If so, they'll probably need a bit of sharpening in post-process.
 
100% on a compact camera, but so was the second photo which is significantly clearer.
 
To add, VueScan is an awful piece of software. The userguide provided is for the previous version! I have no idea how to get the batch scanning working.

I am surprised at how different software gives different results. I have an Epson 4870 scanner. I was never very happy with the standard Epson software but when I changed my computer operating system to Linux, I downloaded Xsane scanner software.

I can get much better results with Xsane than I could with Epson's software. I don't doubt that it's possible to equal the results, it's just that I can easily get good results now and I couldn't before.

Sent it back to Amazon and ordered the Epson V550 as a replacement. The difference is night and day and so much better for negatives.
