I have been having a look at the Amazon Kindle, apart from taking ebooks, it says it can handle documents e.g. .pdf .doc .docx etc.
Can these be transferred from a laptop/PC directly to the Kindle, or does it need to be done through Amazon's paid document transfer service?

You can transfer documents to your Kindle just like you would transfer them to a usb device as long as they are in a Kindle readable format.
This pdf tells you the formats.

Calibre software can convert none- compatible formats to a readable format and can be transferred to the Kindle by usb too.

I have one and the best way is through Calibre which is a free download. However if your in a rush you can just plug the Kindle in your PC and dump it accross. The Kindle comes up as an external drive.

You don't need to pay for anything extra. There are thousands of books available for free too :D

The kindle will read most formats but I have to admit I havent heard of it being able to read DOCX files.

Amazon also have a free file conversion service. See below copied from their site:-

"To access your personal documents on your Kindle, send attachments to your Kindle's e-mail address ("name"@free.kindle.com ). The files will be sent to your Kindle via the Wi-Fi connection and also to the e-mail address associated with your Amazon.co.uk account at no charge."
