Anyone got a Sigma 300mm f/4 APO Prime lens?

In my quest for a long lens, and the Nikon 300mm is pricey, any opinions on this lens. Is it any good???? Will be using it for mainly aircraft.
 
Its an old lens thats not even made any more if I remember correctly. Also you'd need to find a rechipped model to actually work on your camera. The autofocus is screw driven and it hunts in low light, so its not great but might work out for aircraft.

Personally I think you are better off just saving for a sigma 150-500, especially a second hand one. More reach, faster focus and all round better performance.
 
Thanks, one on eBay which I was looking at but a few reviews I had read were far from glowing.
 
I was looking into the 400mm primes for my canon setup about 2 months ago and encountered numerous problems as they are designed for SLR, not DSLR setups. Most of them don't work with modern DSLR cameras and if they do, they usually don't have metering or autofocus.

I got a Tamron 200-400mm F5.6 super zoom from ebay though which is chipped to work pretty damn well with my setup. It meters properly and autofocuses also, plus gives some info to the camera for exif. However the camera doesn't have a clue what it is :D

Can get some bargains if you keep looking though!
 
Someone i knew on another forum got hold of one for its pseudo macro capabilities, he said the image quality was very good (close to modern 300/4's) but the AF was very finicky on his D300.
If I recall correctly there are a few different versions which vary a bit in quality (HSM/non HSM, APO/non APO etc, can't remember specifics).
