Yes
As the title really - anyone tried a Siggy 150mm OS macro yet ? , cant make my mind up Canon 100mm L or the siggy

Thanks - Yea i read that a few day's ago - up untill then i was set on the Canon 100mm L

I think it is simply a choice between two focal lengths. 150mm is much better suited for macro, or at least floral photography and portraits. 100mm is a little short for some applications, but perhaps better for food.

I've had both the non-os versions and preferred the Siggy on a Nikon body, but the Canon on a Canon body, the Sigma on the Canon body just seemed to be missing something

can you not go try both somewhere.

The only photographic shop near me is a Jessops 20 miles away

is the OS version even out in the UK yet?

or have some reviewers etc got their hands on them pre-release?
Yes there's a few shops that have them in stock for Canon mount :)

Do you really want the OS if its going to be stuck on a tripod most of the time

WE did do a special on the non os version a wee while ago which was cheaper than the HK imports - shame it was only for 2 days :bang: as I was gonna get another one...

I'm interested in it but not at the current price tag it has on it thou.. Shae that the non os version are becoming harder to find now days...

Tripod  - 95% of the time i shoot hand held, its the longer working distance and the ability to be able to shoot less than 1:1 that I'm after - i cant get a complete image of a damsel fly with my current setup.

I don't know why I but I just couldn't get on with the 150mm

It's heavier than the canon, much bigger and the OS version is heavier/bigger still. The finish looks odd when on a canon camera (aesthetic issue, doesn't effect results) and the focus ring is too far forward for comfortable use (not an issue if you're at 1:1 all the time)

I also don't like the 150mm framing, yes you get some extra distance, but I often find it too long (most of the insects I photograph are not skittish, and I shoot in the morning), the perspective looks much flatter with the 150, which IMO makes subjects lack any sense of shape, and the depth of field is much less, so I have to shoot at f16 to get the same results as f11 with the 100mm- and I swear the 100mm images just have something nicer about them, and I'm talking about the non L version. I only sold the 100mm because it had pretty poor bokeh, although they've added more blades into the L so it should be better- the sigma does have lovely bokeh though

I feel like my macro photography has gone downhill since getting the 150mm, but maybe it's just me...

the 1.3 crop could have something to do with this

I have been using Sigma 150 mm non OS version and I really like it. I use tripod most of the time during the macro shoot so I dnt need the OS but I believe the OS will be a good asset for portraits and handholds.

I do not know about the new Sigma 150 with OS but with the non IS version the working distance gain over the much lighter Canon 100 is just 1.6" at 1:1 not a lot to get excited about IMO.
BTW for hand held macro stuff I find the Canon 100 LIS superb, I suspect the Siggy OS version will be just as good.

If Sigma are to belived the OS version has a working distance of 240mm (9.56in) at 1:1 which is 94mm (3.6in) more than the Canon 100mm L. :)

Always tricky. If you look at their website page then the features specify;
"at its closest working distance of 15 inches"
but the specification on the same page states;
"Minimum Focusing Distance 38 cm / 15 in"

My take is that you gain 80cm working distance.

If you look on this page you get

Would help if i got the correct lens .......thats the non-OS

Working Distance 24cm / 9.56in :suspect:

That's the non OS version.

Bob

Edit...you edited whilst I was looking....makes one of us look like a plonker (we can start a poll)

We'll soon find out as i've ordered one !

I think you mean 80mm but still a very worthwhile gain for some subjects. If it's as good as the old version, it'll be excellent and my hope is that it'll push Canon into IS'ing their 180L

Carl - I've taken a calculated risk and ordered it from a overseas retailer with less than perfect reviews on the net (using a credit card). - but i have a UPS tracking number so i could be in luck - Time will tell :)

Ok thanks, the reason i asked is that i have found it at £699 from a Ebay seller with stock in the UK ?

Still undecided whether to get this or the Canon 100 IS, i may wait for the verdict from you :)

This MWD is all very strange Bob - I was taking my info from this chart from the digital picture, could it be that different people have different ideas about what is the MWD. I always understood it to be from the end of the lens (at 1:1)

Different people have different ideas! Even Sigma themselves have two different figures quoted on the same page.

MWD is from the end of the lens to the subject, MFD is from the film/sensor plane to the subject.

Yep, this is what Digital picture says so why do they say it is 7.6" (194mm) for the 150 ?

That appears to be the old version....they haven't reviewed the OS version yet.

Yes Bob, it is the old version which I did say in my original post.

Ah...that was yesterday Roy. You're talking to someone here who can't even remember to do up his fly half the time.

Sorry :(

If you got it could you please share how good it is for floral work and portraits or even regular telephoto work.

I am trying to decide between this and 100mm L (to replace non-L if at all)

You got yours then ?

:D

When the thundering and lightning stops I'll give it a test

This was from last night - windy and a bare hotshoe flash so not the best , but looks promising

It is strange how a 150mm has so little working distance advantage over a 100mm when shooting at 1:1. Must be something to do with the lens design I guess - does the Sigma extend or something when focusing ?

Its probably to do with how a macro lens changes its actual focal length as it focus's down to 1:1

The increase in focal length gives a reasonable increase in MFD but that's measured from the sensor plane. Longer focal length lenses are normally physically longer and this starts to eat into the working distance.....win a bit and then lose a bit.

It looks really good. Is it cropped? I am just wandering if 150mm is 'long enough' for these on FF. I find 100mm a bit short for everything except food.

Theres a small crop -

its not the focal length but the reproduction ratio 1:1, which is the same for a 100mm macro & a 150mm macro thats the issue , fly's and small stuff are lost on FF @ 1:1 but its ideal for larger subjects like Damsels , butterfly's etc which are too big to fit in a frame with the MP-e :)
