hey guys,

has anyone got or used the f/2.8 sigma 24-70? I'm interested in how they found it's real world results / images.

its obviously a lot cheaper than the nikon lens. I've read some reviews online, clearly sounds nowhere near as good as the nikon 24-70 f/2.8 with corner softness etc..

I'd be considering one for FX, for portraits, so not fussed about corner softness, plus its pretty cheap compared to the nikon. is it good enough for portraits. I want to shoot it wide open (I know some reviews say once its at f/4 its sharper but that kind of pointless when you buy a 2.8!)

Dont waste your money John, the next best thing to the Nikon 24-70mm is the Tamron 28-75mm, fantastic lens at 20% of the cost of the Nikon and 95% as good

I would second that especially on a crop where you'll loose the corner softness and vignette. The centre is tack sharp.
 
John, ill post up some links to high res files using my Tamron and D700, ill leave EXIF intact

Here you go mate, just resized to 2100 px on the long side, cant say ive ever noticed any of the corner softness or vignetting someone else mentioned

Nice pics Gary, am swaying towards getting this lens, watched a few YouTube reviews and people seem to say its pretty sharp, great value, good size for a 2.8 lens.
 
I'm selling my Sigma 24-70 HSM but swapping it for the Tamron 24-70 - I'm a Canon user by the way.

The Sigma very sharp on the wide end at f2.8, probably better performance than the Canon or new Tamron (according to samples I've seen). The Sigma really lets itself down after 50mm.

I'll let you know how I get on with the Tamron as I should have it by the end of next week.

Gary is this the Vc version of the Tamron, or not. Looking for something in this range for my 7d

cant say i agree, the one i had appeared consistant all the way through.

unfortunately only use it for one wedding for the second camera then had to move it on due to a lack of money (plus we have a 24-105). otherwise itd be in the camera bag.

Gary how good is the Tammy wide open and whats the a.f like in low light?
 
The vignetting is there in the Tamron 28-75, maybe it depends on the sample? Sometimes I quite like it and it's easy to correct in PP anyway.

Tweaks to exposure and white balance only, no vignette added, lens hood is on:

My problem with this lens is the focussing speed (I have the built in motor version). It's fine when the light is good but when the light starts to fall off it starts slowing down and hesitates to lock on. The reason I haven't swapped it for the Sigma with HSM so far is because when it does grab focus the IQ is superb. So now I'm saving for the new Tamron 24-70mm.

Second sample i posted is wide open and its tack sharp, as for AF in poor light, ive never ever had any issues, the vast majority of the trophy celebration type of stuff on my website were taken in some very poorly lit stadiums, if not using flash i was shooting at ISO 3200 on many occasions, to sumarise, AF speed in poor light has never been an issue for me.

Point it at a white(ish) wall and fire a few wide open shots at 28mm if you can't see the vignette then you have a miracle copy. The corners are not terrible but wide open on full frame they are definitely not great.

This is much less of an issue on a crop hence the stellar reviews from crop sensors.

Still all in I love the lens and am stuggling to find an affordable better option. The size is also a big plus as it doesn't weigh you down.

I dont shoot white walls for a living and i dont suppose many folks do, not with a Tamron 28-75mm anyway, to many people get hooked up on crap in reviews which will never affect them in their style/subject of shooting, i do however shoot wide open and ive never seen even a glimpse of vignetting although i suppose it must be there somewhere.

I am going to shoot a white wall at f/2.8 and if it vignettes im gonna hunt you down. :lol::lol:

Seriously, im not going to do it because if the vignette is there ill get all paranoid :lol:
 
The Tamron has much better contrast wide open than the sigma. Seems very sharp too. Most of all I liked the size of it. Its tiny for a mid range 2.8 FX zoom

Looking forward to taking some shots with it with the 10 stopper!

I really can't believe you've not noticed the vignette it's massively obvious at 28mm f2.8 with any light background. It's certainly not just review talk, it's nothing like a show stopper but definitely there.

Thatll be because my 28-75mm only goes to 28mm at the wide end unlike yours which goes to 24mm, seriously though, ive never ever noticed it, maybe its not there on my sample or not as much as on others, dunno but im happy and arent going to go looking for it if its not there.

Maybe its just not noticeable on the type of stuff i shoot
