looking to get a 85mm 1.2 fd and tag it on to my 5d with a convertor

any recommendations - did the autofocus sytem still work, was min / max aperture affected - how were the resulting photos?

cheers in advance

There is no AF with FD lenses. The one's I've seen have quite small apertures, that look much smaller than the rear element of lenses like the 1.2. Also some will foul the mirror (according to the advert here) on FF.

I'd save your money and/or get a 85mm F1.8 for now

My reading of that listing is that the item for sale has been corrected to prevent mirror fouling and to allow focus confirmation ...

"This new model adapter has been redesigned so that it is suitable for all Canon EOS cameras, film and digital.

The adapter is designed to press the mechanical AF switch found on the 1D and many film cameras to permit focus confirmation.
The reflex mirror on full format cameras, including the 5D will not hit the adapter."

I'm also interested in trying some FD lenses as well - but want to make sure I'm not wasting my time or damaging my kit!

FD to EF EOS mount really doesn't work at all well. That's why FD lenses are so cheap.

Manual focus (even with focus confirm), manual aperture, will only focus on infinity with a horrible optical element that ruins image quality and increases focal length/reduces f/number.

For macro with a non optical adaptor, it's worth a go. Otherwise, don't.

thanks for advice guys - sounds like i'll be sticking to looking for an 85mm 1.8 ef again

I have 2 convertors, my AF confirmation chip fell off the second I took it out the box, and the quality you get really is just awful, I'm keeping my FD lenses on my A-1 from now on (unless I'm doing reverse lens, in which case my 50mm 1.8 fd is perfect!).
