i`m a novice tog with a sony a200 i`m learning with and have been offered a 20d as the person isn`t using it anyone and they said i could have it.i work for bt and as i was visiting there house to fix there broadband i said i`d prefer to pay them something as i didn`t feel comfortable taking it.they said ok 30 quid.my question are...
1.is it a good camera as i would need to get a lens for it.
2.is it worth it.
3.is it comparable to the sony for image quality or better.

any help would be appreciated.

thanks rob

I know nothing about the Sony cameras, but I do have someone in the family with a 20D. While it's an old piece of kit, now, it's still a great camera. It's been bettered since its release by other Canon models, but at 30 quid, it's a steal. I'd say go for it.

That could be the best £30 you'll ever spend on this hobby.

I have one that i picked up for £200 a few months ago. Would have loved a 40 or 50 but funds wouldn't allow. That said I've never had a problem with it, solid piece of kit and feels more like a camera should than my 400D.

I have one and I'm happy with it.

Stick and nice lens on it and shoot RAW and I think you'll be pleased with it.

I'd have it but I do have a bag full of lenses that'll fit so I think that the question you should ask yourself is "do I want to spend money on a lens for a different make of camera to the one I'm using."

I personally wouldn't buy it to sell on as my conscience would bother me. If the owner doesn't want the hassle of selling it you could offer to sell it for him but I don't think I personally would take it to sell on for my own benefit.

Canon 20D was my 1st camera. Still use it today as a 2nd body. Personally think that it a great camera, ok its not a new camera (2005/2006), but its well built, great autofocus capabilities, workable ISO range, 8MP, 1.6x crop, I've printed A2 prints from the files, image quality would be down to the lens and settings you use, you can't go wrong with £30, 2nd hand bodies are going for £200/250

What the last two folk said.

Just because something is old doesn't make it unviable. There are numerous advantages to older pro and semi pro kit over the newest entry level jobbie. My camera is even older than the 20D but it's not as if being old suddenly renders the picture taking ability useless.

20D was a great camera, and still is. It has a small LCD but that's it. And while there is nothing wrong with Sony at all, Nikon/Canon have much more extensive systems and since they're much more popular there is loads of good second hand stuff about (on here for example).

I would sell the Sony.

The 20D was my main camera for about 6 years. It's a great piece of equipment that still holds today.

Still have a 20D, and although I've got a 5D and a 1DS the 20D still comes out to play. At £30 it's a steal. Get it a decent lens cos it does deserve it

£30 quid! I still have and use my 20D as a back-up camera now. My only grouse is the (now) small LCD display on the back. Like all cameras of its day, its prone to dust (I've had mine cleaned twice in the time I've owned it) Everything else is just great. I agree with whitewash.

Watch out for BT's strict new policy on Bribes and Gifts

I work for them too and be wary of taking gifts from customers, seen one or two people come unstuck from these situations

Although I like my 20D I can't really see the point of the OP buying one as he already has another system, not unless a really cheapo lens comes along too or he wants to jump systems.

Another thing to perhaps think about is that the 20D might have a few shots under its belt now and the shutter was only rated at??? 50K was it??? Of course the shutter might last for years or it might go tomorrow so buying lenses is a gamble, unless the intention is to switch systems.

So, I don't see much point in anyone buying a used 20D unless the buyer already has Canon kit.

Personally in the OP's position, already having a newer and different camera system, I think I'd pass and maybe just offer to help them sell it.

i got the sony second hand and while its a good camera i regretted not buying into canon/nikon for the reasons used in this thread.i was considering buying another lens for the sony but if the canon is ok i think i`d rather sell the sony before i have invested too much into the sony brand.

as for selling in on for a profit, that would never be my intention.

Good.

It's interesting that you are thinking of switching from Sony to Canon as if I wasn't so tight I'd sell my Canon gear and buy a A900 as the thought of owning a full frame camera with in body image stabilisation and a few nice fast primes is rather nice

As you are thinking of changing systems my mind has now been put at rest and I think that buying the 20D for £30 makes sense.

PS. If you do get the 20D check out Rawshooter Essentials. It's a free RAW processor and it's the nicest one I've used, I really like it and I'll be gutted when and if I can't use it any more.

well i`ve picked it up today and its one lady owner and mint.now i need a lens so can anyone recommend anything?

I love my 20D!! if you invest well in lenses it will do you proud.

all photos in my flickr were taken with a 20D so have a look through if you want :)

If you are wanting to swap to Canon, for £30 you should definitely get it :) It will be a great Canon starter :)

Same here. I have shot quite a few weddings and events with my old 20Ds. I had 4 of them at one point. They're great cameras, and will do everything you need. I still use one as a back up now and again, and as i only really use the back over for viewing histograms and settings, the screen doesnt bother me much. And I hardly even notice that it doesn't have spot metering.

Great camera at a great price.

What a bargain!!!
I have the 20D and the 40D and use both for event photography.
Fantastic camera.
Get a good quality lens and it will serve you well.

20D's are amazing, bit bias cos it was my first camera. My dad now has it, its 6 years old and still going strong. Had another one for a bit too- swapped that for a 40D. Apart from the screen, which is small by today's standards- its a bargain for £30, hell its a bargain for £150

"now i need a lens so can anyone recommend anything?"

It depends what you want Rob.

My most used zoom on my 20D is a Sigma 12-24mm but mostly I use primes. I have a Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 but I don't use that or my 70-300mm any where near as much as the primes or wide. Last night I was shooting indoors in low light so a 20mm f1.8 was my choice, but that's just me...

...What sort of subject do you like to shoot and how much do you want to spend?

depends on your budget.
Csnt go wrong with the nifty fifty (50mm f/1.8) for the price. It gives you the equivalent of 85mm on a full frame, and is great for most applications. You may want something wider for landscape work, but id definitely suggest this for a first lens if you're on a budget.

i was considering a bigma for my sony as i like shooting aircraft and nature.would this be ok for the canon?.

I'm just starting to get into photography and bought a second hand 20D as my first DSLR. IMHO its great, pictures are good and its sensible money. I bought mine with a 50mm f1.8 (nifty fifty) and then bought a 28-105mm f3.5-4.5 as a 'walkabout' lens. IMHO the 28-105 is good but I would prefer something a little shorter, but then I would have to compromise on the long end or size/weight. So in retrospect I think it was a good compromise.
