Anyone here own the Fuji EF-X20 flash with an X-Pro 1?

Hey guys,

I was wondering if anyone here has an XP1 and also ownes the EF-X20 flash and whether or not they would consider it a good buy.

Basically, I like the look of this flash because of it's small size and all I would use it for would be as fill for a heavily backlit subject. I know that the Fuji X100s is renowned for having an amazing ability to balance the on board flash perfectly with almost any kind of crazy lighting situation. And all this without ever looking like a flash was used! This is what I want for my XP1.

So, can anyone out there tell me whether this flash is worth a buy as it's extremely expensive for a simple straight on flash.

I don't have the EF-X20, I have the EF-20 and it works fine with the X-Pro 1.

Unless you are going to use it in manual, I'd choose the EF-20. Half the price (or much less) and you get to move it around a bit. If you plan to use TTL then save some money.
 
But the problem I have with the EF-20 is that it's large and looks pretty stupid on the retro-styled XP1.
 
Both have issues, choose the one with the issues you can live with, looks vs versatility in this case.
 
Basically......in TTL mode I don't believe the EF-X20 can do anything the EF-20 can't. TTL ability is usually determined by the camera not the flash and I haven't seen any evidence that Fuji are doing anything different here. In fact, the EF-20 will give you more options due to the tilt ability.

The EF-X20 will be superior in manual or off camera (EF-20 doesn't have a manual mode). However, apart from power, it's going to be extremely similar to an on camera flash since it's in roughly the same place and roughly the same size. And at that point, you might start to wonder if it's actually worth the best part of £200 or if you might not be better trading the X-Pro 1 for an X-E1.
 
I am thinking about the two as well. I love the look of the EX but worried about using flash directly as opposed to bounce.

Tbh the times I will probably use flash will be at home so snapshots more than anything special, and if out and about and want either a little fill outdoors or in a large venue (say museum) where you can't bounce as ceilings too high anyway.
 
I use an EFX20 with the X20 camera.
It is small enough to stuff in your pocket and forget.
It works with a Canon Off camera flash cord and still gives you TTL on an "X camera" ( not many know that)
It works as a slave to any other flash in manual mode.
It can use the built in flash on the X20 to set it off,when set for off camera flash (power of the inbuilt flash is reduced to only sufficient to trigger it.)

Bought mine refurbished but worth every penny.

...will any canon camera flash cord work or have you a particular link to one?

Afraid not.. the Canon and Fuji use different TTL logic.
However you can use a canon flash on a fjii in manual.
 
Rethink...ah i think i see what you mean now.............I still need to connect a 'proper' Fuji speedlite via the Canon cord for full ttl..........a Canon speedlite via the cord or on the hotshoe even, will only work via manual.

The contacts and wires are all in the right place but they do not all do the same thing in both systems. I am told that the FUJI actually uses one less of them.

Rethink...ah i think i see what you mean now.............I still need to connect a 'proper' Fuji speedlite via the Canon cord for full ttl..........a Canon speedlite via the cord or on the hotshoe even, will only work via manual.
